Plot: Big-budget special effects, swiftly paced action, and a distinct feminist subtext from writer/director James Cameron turned what should have been a by-the-numbers sci-fi sequel into both a blockbuster and a seven-time Oscar nominee. Sigourney Weaver returns as Ellen Ripley, the last surviving crew member of a corporate spaceship destroyed after an attack by a vicious, virtually unbeatable alien life form. Adrift in space for half a century, Ripley grapples with depression until she's informed by her company's representative, Carter Burke (Paul Reiser) that the planet where her crew discovered the alien has since been settled by colonists. Contact with the colony has suddenly been lost, and a detachment of colonial marines is being sent to investigate. Invited along as an advisor, Ripley predicts disaster, and sure enough, the aliens have infested the colony, leaving a sole survivor, the young girl Newt (Carrie Henn). With the soldiers picked off one by one, a final all-female showdown brews between the alien queen and Ripley, who's become a surrogate mother to Newt. Several future stars made early career appearances in Aliens (1986), including Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, and Reiser. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

There is a point in time where it gets old.
Added 8/6/1999

The Alien thrillogy was well thought out and acted out of the scrupts very well, but after part two the plot got old very quickly. It got boring as being part of the same series. The directors should make an Alien vs. Predator movie and end it all there, once and for all. Alien Ressurection was a great movie filled with action, suspense, and twist, but the plot itself is tiring.

ok imagian you were in space with a crew of vagabonds [no trainin barely useful weapons] your doin your job and explorin a planet for habitation and you find a small egg so you take it back for study.no idea whats in side or what terror and death it can bring . thats where it all started the very succesful 4 movie series[soon to be 5] the main characcter and only survivor ellen ripley a rambo esque female tough as nails and twice as sharp. these movies have mad a unbelieveable amount of recognition in the movie world many movies up to date try to copy the best but come up short.in the second movie [ALIENS} you will be able to get to know each of the characters before they die that is unlike most sci fi movies this one has more than jus death dont get me wrong there is alot od death and action but each of the characters are explored . these movies have more depth then most movies up to date i believe you should buy this now if not you are gonna be left in the dust . these are the king of sci fi pickem up now or die these are my fav movies i you couldnt tell

Chills, Spills, Guts and Gore, the alltime best Horror!
Added 12/1/1998

When you think of an Alien, you think of a little green man with a cute little face and and good will to humanity. Well, these Aliens aren't green, their not little, and sure enough, you can throw the good will to humanity out the airlock, cause they have one thing in mind, your utter annihalation! If you want a gut wrenching, clausterphobic, edge of your seat, acion/horror, get the Alien Triology. Or you can always wait for the little green cute guy.....

All I have to say about this movie is... IT'S EXCELLENT!

The first Alien I think is an excellent movie, but I don't like the scene where Sigorney Weaver appears to be exploited (the scene where she gets undressed and she is wearing those unusual underpants). The second Alien movie,Aliens, I don't think has anything wrong with it. I'd say it's one of my favorite movies. I thought this one was just perfect.I thought this one was a little better than the first Alien movie. The third one is not that bad, but I happened to like it least. I do like that surprise ending though, where Ripley (Sigourney Weaver)sacrafices herself to save her crew.

Every Bit As Good As The Original
Added 10/29/2009

Let's just get it out in the open: Sequels, generally speaking, suck. They're contrived, redundant, unimaginative, and pitiful--mere superficial shells of the films that spawned them. However, there are exceptions to this incontrovertible, and ALIENS is one of them. This James Cameron (and who is more fitting to follow Ridley Scott in this sci-fi/horror series?) techno thriller is every bit as gruesome good as its predecessor; and because we have aliens (as in plural) almost jumping out of the hulls and hatches Cameron has more super gore to work with. Yeah, this is one fun flick.

We are re-introduced to Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), who, at fiftsomething years later (she's been sleeping in a vagabond spacecraft), finds herself quite alone and much disturbed from her own unique close encounter. (Weaver is, once again, fantastic.) She teams up with a hearty band of space marines (Hoo-raww!) and returns to the planet where all the fun first began--a planet now being colonized, only the settlers have all disappeared. Of course we know why they've disappeared, and once the marines realize what kind of a mess they're in the fun really begins. The supporting cast is great, including Michael Biehn, Lance Henriksen, Paul Reiser, and a young Bill Paxton as a wide-eyed, expletive-spitting marine. Cameron delivers suspense, special effects, and heart-pounding action by the boatload, including an ingenious battle between Ripley (inside a hydraulic lift) and the queen alien that's every bit of sensational. ALIENS is a true exception to the rule; yeah, sequels suck, but not this one.

A near perfect movie
Added 9/16/2009

Aliens is one of James Cameron's finest, and one of the best movies ever made. This film is a wonderful blend of sci fi, horror, action, comedy and drama, seamlessly combined to make one near perfect movie. It's one you can watch over and over again and not get bored.
The film is also unique in that it is far superior to its original, Alien, which itself was a good sci fi horror movie. It's rarity for a sequel to surpass the original.
The film is perfectly cast, well acted, with great set design and special effects, a perfectly fitting musical score and an excellent plot.
The special edition has some dvd extras and adds 17 minutes of deleted scenes back into the film. My favorite extra on dvd's is the deleted scenes and to have them reedited into the film was a thrill. None of the scenes were bad, though I can see why some were deleted for timing or spacing reasons. Its especially fun on a movie like this to see the extra scenes, cause its a little more of the story you were never told. I personally thought the automatic gun scene should have been left in the original.

A respectable follow-up to an acknowledged classic
Added 9/2/2009

This review is for the 2-disc collector's edition (I mention this because Amazon seems to be lumping all the reviews of various editions together...)

The plot of this film is covered in other reviews, so I shall skip that, except to say that even if you somehow don't know anything about the first film, the movie does a decent job of filling in the backstory, so it is possible for first-time viewers to pick up the story with little discomfort or confusion.

This is a respectable, well-done sequel. Where-as the first film is a tense horror film, this one attempts to up the ante by adding more aliens and more fodder for them to snack on; essentially this is an action film, though it does have some scary moments. It wears its influences from the original film on its sleeve, though, with everything from the moody film-noirish lighting to the automated countdown before a devastating explosion at the end.

This edition of the film offers the theatrical release as well as a director's cut, which is essentially 20 minutes of deleted scenes. Personally, I think they were deleted with wisdom by the execs, as they actually add very little but do take away from the pacing. Others may disagree, of course.

Disc two is an exhaustive documentary on the 'making of' that covers pretty much any and every aspect of the film that fans could possibly want to know.
