Plot: One of the gutsiest movie musicals of the 1950s, Love Me or Leave Me is the true story of 1930s torch-singer Ruth Etting, here played by Doris Day. While working in a dime-a-dance joint, Ruth is discovered by Chicago racketeer Martin The Gimp Snyder (fascinatingly played with nary a redeeming quality by James Cagney). The smitten Snyder exerts pressure on his show-biz connections, and before long Ruth is a star of nightclubs, stage and films. Ruth continues to string Snyder along to get ahead, but she can't help falling in love with musician Johnny Alderman (Cameron Mitchell). After sinking his fortune into a nightclub for Ruth's benefit, Snyder is rather understandably put out when he finds her in the arms of Alderman. Snyder shoots the musician (but not fatally) and is carted away to prison. Upon his release, Snyder finds that Ruth is still in love with Alderman; he is mollified by her act of largesse in keeping her promise to perform in his nightclub at a fraction of her normal salary. No one comes off particularly nobly in Love Me or Leave Me, even though the still-living Ruth Etting, Martin Snyder and Johnny Alderman were offered full script approval. The fact that we are seeing flesh-and-blood opportunists rather than the usual sugary-sweet MGM musical stick figures naturally makes for a more powerful film. In his autobiography, James Cagney had nothing but praise for his co-star Doris Day, and bemoaned the fact that she would soon turn her back on dramatic roles to star in a series of fluffy domestic comedies. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

A New Day...

I was not a big fan of Doris Day. I've always appreciated her singing but her sunny-sweet disposition never appealed to me much. As I'm sure it it so with many actresses, if those character-types are all that they're allowed to do, that's all we'll get to see. Fortunately, in Love Me or Leave Me, Doris got the role of a lifetime playing Ruth Etting, in a fictional account of the singers' rise to stardom. Her performance was not only well-acted and beautifully sung, it was enjoyable to see Day's strength as well as her suffering. Day is matched with the incomparable James Cagney as her mentally and physically abusive gangster-husband Marty Snyder. Cagney has such a strong personality and usually dominates any role he plays. He's played gangsters so many times, I half expected his performance to be great with minimal effort. However, Cagney not only respects his fellow actors, but also the actors' process and chose to play Snyder's complexities with incredible delicacy. Snyder is not only vicious and controlling, but he's also desperate, lonely and devoted to Etting. He wants to be needed by her but also wants to pull all the strings. It is this monstrous fragility that makes Etting repulsed and fearful of him, indebted to him, but also unwilling to hurt him even in the final act. I wish Day and Cagney had done more films together (other than West Point Story). Day especially deserved more opportunities to show her worth.

This is Doris Day's finest moment on screen. A dramatic role that caused a mild sensation with fans. Still, she is perfect, sings wonderful songs and captures the torment of Ruth who rises to fame with her stranglehold "lover" and manager "The Gimp" aka James Cagney. Together they torch the screen with drama, splendor and deliver Technicolor sets the way they were meant to be seen- VIBRANT ! The title song will grab you every time Doris sings "Love me or Leave Me! The other torch song "Ten Cents a Dance" echos Ruth's abuse of the "Gimp."

Wonderfully Done Movie!

This movie stars Doris Day and James Cagney possibly in their very finest performance. Day is quite different in her acting role which is very dramatic and well played out. Her singing is outstanding. Cagney is great as the insecure gangster too.
The plot, costumes, acting, and everything is superb. If you love Doris Day then this is the movie for you. It is one of those movies you can watch and discuss and then watch it over again. TWO THUMBS UP!!!!
