Plot: After producer Irwin Allen highlighted the dangers of fire in the Towering Inferno and the dangers of water in the Poseidon Adventure, he is back to fire again but this time it is within the earth, at least for awhile. This fairly routine disaster film is set on a resort island with a volcano that is beginning to rumble. Stars include a long list of names: Paul Newman is Hank, the savvy oil driller who gets people to safety even against their will, Jacqueline Bisset is the woman he is interested in, William Holden, Eddie Albert, Barbara Carrera, Veronica Hamel and several others play individuals trapped on the island. Hank convinces some people to follow him to the highest part of the island as the volcano gets set to blow its top. They encounter several dangerous situations after the dormant volcano wakes up but nothing quite like the non-stop, action filled, death-defying scenes from the explosion of volcano movies that hit the screens in 1997: Dante's Peak, Volcano, Eruption, Volcano: Fire in the Mountain, and a few more from around the world. They formed a virtual 1997 ring of fire. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

this is an spectacular movie with a great all star cast like paul newman, jacqueline bisset, william holden, veronica hamel.....in a south pacific island's dormant volcano unexpectedly erupts in fury. among those imperiled by the carl foreman/stirling script are wildcat oil driller (paul newman), hotel baron(william holden)and jacqueline bisset as a pr executive who must choose between them. which familiar faces will survive when there's no such thing as safe ground? watch and watch out for yourself as the lava flows, so also flows rare and rousing screen excitement!.i recommended.

This movie is a real sleeper - exciting, intrigue , good acting and romance. Amazing combination woven in a back drop of impending disaster. Great special effects. This movie really moves along - Paul Newman is his usual terrific and works well with William Holden. They combined for another great flick in the Towering Inferno - if you like this movie the Towering Inferno is a must.

Decent movie to watch.

I think this movie is better than what I've heard. I remember watching it on t.v. a while back. The movie has a decent plot, and where the plot misses, there is a good cast. I have seen worse movies, and most of them were released not too long ago. Ironman was the most boring movie I've seen in sometime. Given the choice of this older movie, and Ironman, this movie wins hands down. If you are wondering if you should order this movie, or not would depend if you're a Paul Newman fan. I am, especially if it's a disaster flick like this, or Towering Inferno.

any film buff will be happy with getting a movie on what ever format is still for sale,we would all like a blue ray copy of everything, but in the real world no chance. This then was the best copy of this movie on vhs at 141 mins, dvd cut to 109,as for the film rates two stars for full length,on a par with the 1980 film the island as why did they make it,no star looks happy in it,must have been the pay check.Story on an lsland when disaster hits is nothing new,but tv is so bad these days ok time filler, and is a bit of movie history

Glad but disappointed

I was happy that When Time Ran Out was put on DVD. I made a copy of it a thousand years ago when it came on TV, but I wanted to purchase a copy. The VHS version cost a lot of money and it is a used copy that I could purchase through Amazon. So when the DVD came out I purchased it. In viewing it, there were scenes that I recalled but did not see. In checking with Amazon, I discovered that the VHS has 142 minutes and the DVD has only 121 minutes. This was the part I was disappointed about not the movie itself. I still love the movie. I wish they recopy it and put back the scenes that were original on the VHS and TV version.
