Plot: The still unknown Kevin Costner carries this film that involves five college roommates on a last fandango before they separately face the harsh realities of an unpredictable future. It is 1971, and the Vietnam War has not yet ended. Gardner Barnes (Costner) has extended his college years by six semesters in an attempt to stave off the rapidly approaching future, Kenneth (Sam Robards) has just canceled his wedding in a drunken look at reality, Lester (Brian Cesak) loves alcohol and tags along with the group just to have a good time, Dorman (Chuck Bush) is devoted to existentialism and flights of poetic fancy, and Phil (Judd Nelson) is barely a member of the group because he is consorting with the enemy: he is a member of ROTC. This unlikely mismatch cavorts through several classic college pranks, among them taking bets on daredevil acts like skydiving into the middle of nowhere. As their high jinks continue, it becomes apparent that their real desire is not to live a wild life for its own sake, but to postpone the moment when they will have to leave school and its lifestyle behind them. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Fantastic!

Fandango remains a largely unknown and underappreciated gem of a movie. The characters, music, scenery, locations, and plot are absolutely spectacular.

In a nutshell, Fandango is story of friendship, camaraderie, loyalty, lost love, overcoming fears, taking responsibility, growing up, and saying goodbye.

I never get tired of seeing this movie, it contains life lessons applicable to all of us. Buy the DVD and share it with others - they will thank you for it.

Also, sometime in your life I highly recommend you take a road trip through West Texas (Midland/Odessa, Monahans, Pyote, Marfa, Alpine, Marathon, San Elizario, El Paso, and Big Bend National Park) - you'll be glad you did.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time and in my opinion, one of Kevin Costner's best performances! The funny thing is, the role of Gardner Barnes is what I imagine Kevin Costner to be more like in real life; yet Kevin hardly seems to ever acknowledge this film at all! There's a website out there ([...]) just for this movie and it's fans, and nothing from Kevin on it. But thank God for Chuck Bush for keeping this going. Even on the James Lipton show "Inside the Actors Studio" on Bravo featuring Kevin Costner, there was absolutely no mention of Fandango. And, whether Kevin cares or not, this makes me think less of him.

As for the movie itself, if you're a guy, this one should rank up there with Animal House and Caddyshack in my estimation. It's hilarious to see Judd Nelson in this contrasting role when compared to his role in the Breakfast Club. And the role of Truman Sparks is very charismatic and memorable. It really takes a brilliant actor to play such a serendipitous character the way Marvin J. McIntyre does.

As for the ladies, even if you don't like Animal House and the like, there is an amazing dance sequence in the reception scene near the end of the movie along with some of the best soundtrack music ever in a movie - which brings me to another point, where is the official soundtrack to this movie? It is criminal that no one from this movie has done this for Christ's sake! Yes, I said it, Jesus himself would love this movie and the music in it!

Bottom line, for the money, and even if this dvd were expensive, Fandango is an absolute paragon and is a must-have for any genuine movie collector - and should be a must-have for any thespian aficionado too! The only drawback is the lack of extra features etc. Perhaps Mr. Costner will come to his senses and take the initiative himself in a re-release of this epic with all the attention and extras it deserves!

Best "coming of age" movie ever!

This is a great movie about five guys moving into the next phase of their lives in a very termultious time. You can actually see the actors grow from boys to men from the start to the end of the movie. Plus it is VERY funny. Some of the humor you will only get if you are from Texas and sometimes it takes a few watches to get the humor.

My personal highlight from this magical little film: The dance sequence set to Pat Metheny's "It's For You".

Fandango is a funny, yet hard-warming look at Texas in the Vietnam-era. The music from Pat Metheny is especially beautiful.
