Plot: The fancy footwork and star appeal of Gregory Hines as Raymond, an exiled American, and the powerful grace of Mikhail Baryshnikov as Nikolai, a defector, combine with a great production design to carry this otherwise thinly-stretched tale of intrigue. With a stellar supporting cast (Isabella Rossellini as Raymond's wife, Helen Mirren as Nikolai's lover, and Jerzy Skolimowski, the Polish director, as a wily KGB agent), the film has a few excellent moments. Nikolai has defected from the former USSR some time in the past. While on a trip, his plane spectacularly crashes on a runway in Siberia. Trapped in the country he had escaped, he is brought to stay with Raymond, an American who defected during the Vietnam war. Nikolai desperately wants to get out of the country, but the Russians have other plans. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

Spectacular Dancing
Added 7/2/2009

This movie stars two top dancers in their respective fields, tap and ballet. Even though the plot is somewhat slow and dated, reminiscent of the Cold War era, the individual and duo dance scenes are awesome. Seeing Helen Mirren in earlier days is an added bonus. If you love dance, I guarantee that you will love this movie!

Amazing... even if you just watch for the dancing
Added 6/30/2009

This movie is a beautiful love story and representation of life and times in Russia at the time of its making, but even if you can't see that, it's worth watching for the dancing. Mikhail and Gregory are just absolutely amazing, and that in itself makes the film worth watching. For those of you with a heart, however, there will be a lot more to it.

masters preserved
Added 5/16/2009

I searched for this movie on DVD for a long time. It contains performances that should be preserved by Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines, two of the masters of dance in this century. And the movie itself is not half bad either.

A dream
Added 5/9/2009

Here in Brazil we could not find this DVD anymore. We looked for it a lot. It was my young friend dream to watch WHITE NIGHTS and see his idol and "mentor" to dance and also as a movie star. Now my 16 years old Brazilian dancer is happy and doing his job of studying dance -a hard task for a boy, isn't it? - better than ever!!
THANKS!!!

Fabulous movie---I wasn't certain that I'd be able to find the DVD since it's an older movie.
