A very entertaining Sci-Fi action thriller with a twist!
Added 8/1/2009
I've been planing on replacing my VHS version for about 5 years. This movie has a very witty script. Even though it's displayed in a serious vain, you can't help but laugh at the plot of an alien being that comes to earth & jumps from one human to another as the last one starts to wear out....all the while, the being enjoys fast cars, especially Ferraris & loud rock music. Oh, this thing also enjoys the body of very sexy women. Then there's the Detective who can't shoot straight as he goes after what he thinks are bad guys.
Impress yourself, your friends with this excellent flick. This is one gem of a SciFi action thriller that didn't get most peoples attention the 1st time around. Everyone is always looking for that special "sleeper" that most haven't seen, & this is it! So, don't let this DVD stay "Hidden" (no pun intended) from your collection..lol..lol
BTW: New Line Cinema did a superb job remastering this DVD from the film. The picture is sharp with vivid colors. This 1987 film looks as good on DVD as any 2009 release!!!! Trust me, even though you might not like SciFi....you'll enjoy this one. :) A+++

"A Career In The Police Force Didn't Really Prepare You For This, Did It?"
Added 7/31/2009
Across Los Angeles, a small number of people who have been leading previously peaceful, placid lives suddenly begin engaging in orgiastic sprees of armed robbery, murder and grand theft auto. What is driving these previously upstanding citizens to these depths? LA Cop and wildcard Michael Beck (Michael Nouri) is hot on the trail of the first of the perpetrators in question when he finds himself unwittingly partnered with decidedly strait-laced FBI agent, Lloyd Gallagher (Kyle Maclachlan). Their pursuit of the truth behind the explosion of violence rocking the city of Angels will lead them through a wilderness of carnage, destruction and betrayal.
Jack Sholder's 'The Hidden' is an enjoyable, well-made piece of late eighties LA/Sci-Fi exploitation which cheerfully mines all manner of conceptual gold from films like The Terminator and The Thing (Collector's Edition) and novels like Robert A. Heinlein's THE PUPPET MASTERS and yet manages to regurgitate them in a form which still manages to feel fresh and entertaining.
A lot of the film's appeal can be attributed to Bob Hunt's script (which refuses to insult the intelligence of it's hard-bitten cop characters) and Sholder's direction which is heavily accented towards the humourous and the hyper-kinetic (well, for the eighties anyway. The ADD style of filming and edited favoured by most action directors these days may well make it seem a tad stodgy to younger viewers - but bear in mind that this is a period piece).
Michael Nouri is an actor I can't recall seeing in any other film than this one. He makes a perfectly servicable if rather humdrum cop on the edge; a youthful Kyle Maclachlan's turn as an alarmingly fresh-faced FBI agent is a hint at the greater things to come, as is Claudia 'Bablyon 5' Christian's deeply amusing turn as a stripper-turned-shotgun-wielding-psychopath who comes off like 'Ah-nuld' in thigh high boots. There are also 'blink and you'll miss them' cameos from the likes of Rodriguez/Tarantino favourite Danny Trejo and Jack McGee ('Chief Jerry Reilly' from the excellent fire-fighter drama, Rescue Me - The Complete First Season) and a decent turn from exploitation favourite, Clu Gulager (of The Return of the Living Dead fame).
By no means a perfect film, it is still a highly entertaining one if you're both familiar and comfortable with the conventions of the late eighties LA/Sci-Fi sub-genre.
If you enjoy this, I also recommend that you check out the Tom Selleck vehicle, "Runaway"; the exploitation favourite, "Trancers"; the similar, although decidedly more cheesy, "Dark Angel"; the deeply amusing valley-girls-vs-zombies comedy, "Night of the Comet" and Steve De Jarnatt's genuinely brilliant Nuclear paranoia shocker, "Miracle Mile".

Sci-Fi Campy Fun - 1980s Style
Added 4/25/2009
I had never heard of THE HIDDEN. When my husband put it on last night, I thought "What is this, a cheesy shoot`em up cop flick? A `B' horror movie?" But I have to admit, I quickly changed my tune. THE HIDDEN is all of those things, and much, much more. In fact, I really enjoyed this movie.
In THE HIDDEN, law abiding citizens are suddenly going on wild, violent killing sprees and then turning up dead. There is a pattern to these outbreaks; they started up north in Washington, have made their way through Oregon, and are now happening in LA. An LA cop and an FBI agent team up to catch the latest killer and put an end to all the bloodshed. But, there is something else going on here, something more than meets the eye. Something is very, very wrong, and it must be stopped. Immediately.
THE HIDDEN is bloody, violent, with innumerable chase scenes. It has a campy, well-worn plot. The special effects, well, they aren't, not even for the `80s. And the hair...you gotta love the hair. But THE HIDDEN is very entertaining and just plain fun. The twist at the end is suspected, but plays out a bit differently than originally thought.
THE HIDDEN is a hidden gem. If you like cop thrillers, B-movies, sci-fi, or enjoyable, light evenings at home, try THE HIDDEN.

Incredibly Entertaining!
Added 2/20/2009
This movie is a hidden gem and enormously entertaining.
It's a fast- paced account of normal people taking turns being inhabited by an alien being and suddenly turning into out-of-control killing machines. It guess it kind of sounds dumb, but seeing it is better than describing it. The characters in here are wild.
Kyle MacLachlan plays his normal mid-80s strange character, a la "Blue Velvet," "Twin Peaks," etc. Here, he is the FBI agent....or is he?
On the first viewing I found Michael Nouri's role as too abrasive, taking away from some of the fun of viewing this, but, in future viewings he was more tolerable. What also helps this film is a little bit of humor thrown in here and there.
It will probably wind up as a cult classic.
