Plot: The second Dirty Harry movie, Magnum Force concerns itself with a vigilante group that has targeted notorious scofflaws for extermination. When a prominent gang boss or drug-runner is set free by the airheaded liberal courts, a covert group of avengers is soon on hand to blow the miscreant to bits. While detective Dirty Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) is no great friend of civil liberties, he is dead set against wholesale murder as a solution to legal loopholes. Discovering that all the killings have been committed by the same weapon, Callahan reaches the conclusion that his on-the-edge partner, Charlie McCoy (Mitchell Ryan), is responsible. But the answer is less transparent than that, as Harry learns almost at the cost of his own life. Co-scripted by John Milius and Michael Cimino, Magnum Force was followed by three additional Dirty Harry installments: The Enforcer (1976), Sudden Impact (1983) and The Dead Pool (1988). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Clint's MOST VIOLENT Dirty Harry!
Added 9/30/2009

When MF first came out in the early 1970's I went back to see it three or four times in the theatre. Its still Clint's MOST VIOLENT Dirty Harry, this thing is wall to wall constant killing scenes, to the point of over the top. BUT, this was probably one of the films big attractions when it came out. I've watched it numerous time over the past 30+ years, including last night.

While, NOT as good as Dirty Harry, MF is an interesting 1st sequel. The police shooting competition scene where Clint strolls around the course in the t shirt/windbreaker he looks simply FANTASTIC as the A List Hollywood star that he was.

My problem looking a MF today is that the constant violence scenes push a fairly good story line too far into the back ground. Another thing IMO that elevates this film is Hal Holbrook's really fine acting in MF against Clint's DH.
Believe Clint did some of the actual down grade driving scenes in San Francisco with Holbrook in that car that scared the living S--- out of Holbrook! A man's got to know his limitations.

Good stuff!

The Dirty Harry series is a FIVE STAR experience. This film is a four star product, however, and for a very sensible reason: It isn't as great as some of the other chapters, like SUDDEN IMPACT. If you are a Dirty Harry fan you will like it though! Count on it!

The best "Dirty Harry" flick
Added 9/4/2009

I have watched and enjoyed all of the "Dirty Harry" flicks, and they are all pretty good. This one is the best of the lot. The casting is superb, the story is interesting and fast-moving, and at all times this film holds the viewer's attention. Eastwood was born to play Inspector Callahan, and it is always a treat to watch one of these films. Hal Holbrook, as Harry's nemesis police lieutenant (will this series ever show a police lieutenant who is not a jerk?) is excellent. The actors comprising the supporting cast, including David Soul and others, are also very good.

An excellent film that all fans of Clint Eastwood will want to own and enjoy. RJB.

Who Watches the Watchers?
Added 9/2/2009

"Do you feel lucky?" The released defendants seem so. There is a crowd in front of the courthouse. He was freed on a "legal technicality", inadmissable evidence. [Do you know what that means?] The officer does not like the driver's comments, but does not issue a ticket. Harry Callahan shows up, Lt. Briggs orders him away. At the airport Harry prevents an airplane from being hijacked by two villainous looking men. [Profiling?] Later he meets three rookies on the firing range. Coincidence? A satchel charge breaks up a pool party. Is it a gang war? On a stake-out Harry sees a robbery and ends it with the other policemen. There is an incident in a red taxicab. She worked hard for her money. Later the man is stopped for speeding, permanently.

Callahan is reassigned to homicide, too many bodies are turning up. Harry investigates the murder. He gets his orders. Will something happen to a man the police are watching? Yes, and others too! Harry says he knows who the killer was, but there is bad news. How did Davis get there so fast? Harry found a slug, is it a match? There is a shoot-out to create action. [Believable?] More bodies fall. Harry gets the blame. "That's insane." Will there be more sacrifices? [Will the best friend of the hero suffer for dramatic effect?] Will Harry get a confession from the traffic cops? What is in the mailbox? Does Lt. Briggs has a surprise for Harry? "Where will it end?" There is action in a fast car down Lombard Street to create suspense. [Is that the industrial area of South San Francisco?] There is a surprise in the dark, then a chase on an old flat-top. There is one last surprise at the end for poetic justice.

This film suggests that the police can "clean up" the town by shooting "bad guys". The lesson of history is that this would create a new class who ruled by terror. Power corrupts. Machiavelli warned against using hired military. The only safe use of power is with a democratic militia, as was done from the 18th to the 20th century. There was little organized crime in those days. Or laws against gambling, drugs, drinking, or vice. You can't choose the good over the bad, only the lesser evil.

Great sequel
Added 5/4/2009

I'm pretty surprised at the bad reviews for this movie. I thought this was a great sequel, granted the first movie is pretty hard to live up to but I thought this was a great effort.
First of all the story -line is great: Renegade cops killing thugs makes great drama. Harry's not up against crooks but fellow cops! Second this film really gets gritty I mean at the end Harry's takin these guys out with his bare hands and his car and the final seen is classic!! Watch it.
