Plot: Michael (Patrick Dempsey) is a college student invited to spend Christmas vacation in Quebec City with his sweetheart Gabby (Jennifer Connelly) and her family. The wide-eyed Michael sees the city as a fairytale land with the splendid architecture gently dusted by the falling snow. When Michael arrives, Gabby tells him she is breaking up with him, and separate sleeping arrangements are made, and Gabby's mother (Florinda Bolkan) makes sure the visitor adheres to Gabby's wishes. Gabby's eccentric father (Andre Gregory) is an idealistic scholar who likes to work in the nude. Michael isn't lonely for long, as Gabby's two younger sisters show amorous interest in him. Lila Kedrova gives an excellent performance as the slightly daffy grandmother who believes Michael is her late husband. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

Love, Lust, Pathos, and Snow
Added 10/21/2006

This film is on my list as one of the best I've ever seen. I've shared this film with many friends and noticed something strange. Women thought the film was very good. Men thought it was great. This struck me as odd because people usually think of romance films as "chic flicks." This one seems to touch a deeper chord in men.

I think men can identify with Patrick Dempsey's character. He is caught in the wonderful, frightful, exhilirating, heart-breaking world controlled by fascinating, beautiful, powerful women. His motivations shift as the movie progresses as does his understanding of love.

The film is beautifully crafted with a deep understanding of the humanity of love in all its forms. It's a must see.

Maybe on Blue-Ray?
Added 9/16/2006

It's been many years since I have seen this movie, and I have been waiting along time to see it again. I first rented it way back, because Jennifer Connelly was in it, but it actually turned out to be a very nice story anyway.

Ever since DVDs started rolling out, this was one of the movies at the top of my DVD list. Sadly, it looks like that day may never come, so I am now hoping that it may see the light of day again, this time on Blue-Ray.

Robert Redford's Last Stand?
Added 6/2/2006

Some reviewers are going way over the top. But I agree that it's a good movie, and because of the last 20 minutes, a very good movie. The voiceover detracts more than it helps the chemistry of the movie, but that's nit-picking. A DVD would be nice, and (I know the purists may lynch me) a remake might be a cool idea. I read that this wasn't released in the U.S. because producer Robert Redford wouldn't compromise the integrity of the film by cutting a frontal nude scene by the lead (male) character. If that's true, I don't see the big deal (pun not intended). Cut the scene and move on - it's not essential to the story one litte bit (pun intended.

Visually stunning and sweet film about romantic love
Added 12/7/2005

I first encountered this film late one night on a cable channel. I wish I could have experienced it in a theatre. I am not a big fan of Patrick Dempsey, but I found this to be the best film he has been a part of.

Visually speaking, this is a unique movie to look at. Like most films by director Michael Hoffman, Some Girls utilizes unusual light and color design that permeate almost every frame of the picture. The unique locations, sets, a color further accentuate the eccentric characters featured in the story.

The film is careful mixture of eroticism and romantic love. Most of the film seems to be a character study of an eccentric family mixed with elements of comic reflief. The end of the film takes the viewer on an unexpected romantic turn, which is certainly mystical and satisfying.

The only big drawback about this movie is that it is available on VHS only. Someone please put this film on DVD!
