Plot: On the occasion of wealthy patriarch Burt Lancaster's 77th birthday, his Long Island home is invaded by well-meaning family members. Lancaster is bored by the well-meaning interference of his grown children, but he thrives on the company of his grandchildren, especially 5-year-old Macaulay Culkin (in a terrific pre-star performance). To the kids, Lancaster reveals what he really wants as a birthday present: an old-fashioned Viking funeral! From this point on, the ending of Rocket Gibraltar is a done deal, but getting there is all the fun. A superb, hand-picked cast--including Suzy Amis, Sinead Cusack, John Glover, Bill Pullman and Kevin Spacey -does full justice to Amos Poe's whimsical, often deeply touching script. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Great Family Movie
Added 6/22/2009

We have seen the movie in the past and wanted to share it with other family members. A great story of family relationships, and how a young boy and his grandfather shared a strong bond...beyond what the rest of the family observed. How the story ends touches everyone dramatically.

A little gem...
Added 9/5/2008

What makes this story so engaging is that much of it is told from the viewpoint of the children who have come with their parents to attend their grandfather's 77th birthday party. From listening to stories that Grandpa tells, the kids get the idea that he doesn't want to be buried (no worms!) when he dies, but would prefer to go out in a blaze with a Viking funeral. So when he dies unexpectedly and the kids discover it before any one else does, they set out to fulfill his wishes.
I've never really been a fan of Macaulay Culkin who plays the primary role here but this may be one of his best performances as a child actor. He brings all the sweetness and innocent child-like wisdom to the part that makes this story really work on so many levels. This is definitely a movie you'll want to watch more than once. You are guaranteed to laugh as well as cry and think seriously about the quality and meaning of your life -- and how you want to go out at the end. I don't know about you, but I'm all for the Viking funeral myself.

One of Burt's best

An older Burt Lancaster, in one of his last movies, gives a
performance that shows why we like him so much. A very young
Macaulay Culkin has never been cuter or more loveable than
in this film. This is a movie that brings home the meaning
of "family gathering", and will give the viewer an equal
share of laughter and some sadness. Don't look for the
rockets, there aren't any.

Wonderful

This is a film I watch when I'm in the mood for a poignant, feel-good movie. Macauly Culkin was marvelous, and it's one of my favorite Burt Lancaster movies. The topic of death isn't always easy to weave into a movie plot, but this one has a twist that makes the viewers ponder about how they would want to go out of this world.
