Plot: Greed is Good. This is the credo of the aptly named Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas), the antihero of Oliver Stone's Wall Street. Gekko, a high-rolling corporate raider, is idolized by young-and-hungry broker Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen). Inveigling himself into Gekko's inner circle, Fox quickly learns to rape, murder and bury his sense of ethics. Only when Gekko's wheeling and dealing causes a near-tragedy on a personal level does Fox reform-though his means of destroying Gekko are every bit as underhanded as his previous activities on the trading floor. Director Stone, who cowrote Wall Street with Stanley Weiser, has claimed that the film was prompted by the callous treatment afforded his stockbroker father after 50 years in the business; this may be why the film's most compelling scenes are those between Bud Fox and his airline mechanic father (played by Charlie Sheen's real-life dad Martin). Ironically, Wall Street was released just before the October, 1987 stock market crash. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

I laugh at idiots who complain about the blue ray transfer
Added 10/30/2009

I guess these days any idiot with a computer can post a review. If you are looking for demonstration quality video buy some cartoons and drop some acid since obviously plot and drama mean nothing to you not to mention social significance. Stone is making a new film Wall Street 2 which should be in theaters next year 2010. It will star Michael Douglas but not Charlie Sheen. I am a professional bonds trader and this film is accurate, stock market investing is a sham and a scam, the average person will never gross dollar one.

20 YEARS LATER: GREED IS NOT SO GOOD
Added 10/6/2009

Hard to believe it's been over 20 years since the release of the movie that gave us the clever tag-line "Greed is good."

The now double-irony of that phrase could not really be foreseen except by a prophet or time traveler from the future we now inhabit.

Maybe greed is not so good. Maybe the ideas of capitalism and democracy are not even fraternal twins from the same father.

What has gone wrong?

Take another look at this film with the hindsight that two decades provides. There are clues.

Michael Douglas won an Oscar© for playing a Donald Trump-like character perfectly named Gordon Gecko. Gecko, like the namesake reptile, had an uncanny ability to stick to his prey until he absorbed it.

Martin Sheen is a young trader who worships Gecko. He's the apprentice to the sorcerer. But in the end, discovers the real cost of selling one's soul.

But have we as a nation reached that nadir? What is there at the bottom of the well of greed?

Oliver Stone and Michael Douglas are committed to "Wall Street II."

But what would make an even better story is the turning point in Bernie Madoff's life when he made that first theft from an investor, told the first lie and put his hand back in his own pocket. It could be the "Citizen Kane" of the 21st Century. After all, the money Madoff made off with is greater than the wealth of publisher Randolph Hearst, the purported character on which Kane was based. But what's Madoff's "Rosebud"? I bet Madoff was a kid with a stolen nickel. And it wasn't enough. It never is.

a 5 star movie with a 1 star blu ray transfer

It's a terrible shame when you buy one of your favorite movies on Blu Ray hoping to get the best image quality and finding out that the image is actually the same as the DVD one. I have a high definition Sony TV and top of the line Blu Ray player and really I can't see any difference between the DVD version upscaled with my Blu Ray player and this Blu Ray version. I am utterly disappointed.

Wall Street is a knockout!

This movie is incredible! It was perfect for the timing! It was the 1987 and the market crashed! Oliver Stone was just in time for his new blockbuster hit Wall Street. The ultimate billion dollar Wall Street baller Gordon Gekko (played by Michael Douglas) is a business savvy money making machine! A crook nonetheless Gordon was making millions a day and was at his prime. A young (Buddy as Gordon called him) Bud Fox was tired of code calling and wanted to run with the big dogs. Getting in with Gordon was hard, but staying as his new sidekick was even harder! As Gordon teaches Bud the ins and outs of the Street, back-stabbing and arrogance sets in, making for an amazing plot!
This movie is a must have for anybody who likes the art of "WALL STREET"!
Go get it now.

"Stop going for the easy buck and start producing something with your life." ...

"Create, instead of living off the buying and selling of others."

Everyone is always quoting the "Greed is good speech" but for me those two sentences spoken by Bud's dad are the most powerful in the entire movie. That is the message to be taken away from this movie. Unfortunately it seems as though the only message most Americans walked away with is really believing greed is good. To think so many in the financial world wanted to emulate Gordon Gekko (and still do) speaks volumes of everything that is wrong with this country, and with the perversion of capitalism in general.

While the movie addressed the ridiculous, over-the-top greed of Wall Street in the 80's, that greed is still here with us. It manifested itself in the 90's in the form of an internet bubble, with money being thrown around by incredibly inept people to incredibly inept people and ideas. Then when that went "boom" we moved right into the next bubble, known as the housing market/credit bubble from which we are still suffering. When we're out of this bubble they'll be some other get rich quick scheme that everyone including Wall Street will jump all over. That will also go bust and then we'll be right back to square one. What is sad, is that people like myself who didn't spend more than they earn, didn't buy McMansions, didn't get themselves in credit card debt up to their neck, didn't spend every dime they made on material items, and didn't default on their loan obligations have to pay the price for the idiots who did. Our children's, children's, children are going to be paying for the mess created by the idiots in the past 30 years.

I saw this movie when it originally was released in theaters 22 years ago, and it has lost none of its importance, power, relevance, and meaning. Hopefully future generations who watch this film will get the right message out of this brilliant movie.
