Plot: Rusty Sabich (Harrison Ford) is a bland, oppressed man who burns with a quiet, corrosive intensity that can flare uncontrollably. A Philadelphia prosecutor, Sabich's fire seems to have one outlet: his job. He loves prosecuting people. Otherwise, his life is dead-ended. He has a loveless marriage to a neurotic woman (Bonnie Bedelia) and an overbearing boss (Brian Dennehy) in a labyrinthine law enforcement world of corruption and twisted relationships. Then Carolyn Polhemus (Greta Scacchi) comes into his life. Lovely and seductive, Polhemus easily entices him to break his marital vows, but she schemes to get him to try for his boss' job. When he refuses, she leaves him. When she turns up dead, the victim of an apparent rape-murder, clues begin to point to Sabich. His blood type almost perfectly matches that in the semen found in the victim, carpet fibers at the crime scene match those found in his house, and most damning, his fingerprints are found on a beer glass in Polhemus' apartment. His protestations of innocence ignored, Sabich is put on trial for the murder and hires his biggest adversary (Raul Julia) to defend him. ~ Nick Sambides, Jr., All Movie Guide

Surprisingly good legal thriller
Added 10/26/2009

The Bottom Line:

Much more realistic and fascinating than your average legal thriller, with few of the stupid tricks that characterize the genre (e.g. witnesses recanting on the stand, multiple personalities, etc.) and a persistently interesting storyline; I'm still not sure I like how the plot resolves itself, but this Pakula-helmed adaptation of Scott Turow's bestseller deserves to be held above the Primal Fears of the world.

There was a crime, there was a victim, and there is punishment

Prosecutor Rusty Sabich (Harrison Ford) comes in to find out that a co-worker he'd been having an affair with was brutally raped and tortured. His boss Raymond Morgan (Brian Dennehy) gives him the case, despite the two's shared past.

As Rusty progresses with the investigation, evidence is pointing more and more to him. Eventually, he's charged and one of the most compelling court dramas ensues.

"Presumed Innocent" literally had me on the edge of my seat both times I've watched this film. While Scott Turow's book is better, the movie's still great.

I enjoy movies, old and new, and the prices @ Amazon are the best. Shipping varies, sometimes is fast, sometimes takes a bit longer. I'm very happy with all they have to offer.

Witness for the Prosecution
Added 12/9/2008

"Presumed Innocent" is one of the late Alan Pakula's lesser-known gems... after all,he did "All the President's Men" about Watergate and "Klute" with Jane Fonda as a prostitute/detective. Based on a legal thriller by Scott Turow,it is a skillful whodunit. Harrison Ford stars as a lawyer, Rusty, who's been carrying on a hot affair with Carolyn Polhemus (the glamorous Greta Scacchi) She cut off the affair because he wasn't furthering his career... then she is found terribly ravaged and murdered. Who did it?

The late Raul Julia as well as Brian Dennehy turn in excellent performances as Rusty's colleagues. Bonnie Bedelia stars as Rusty's heartbroken, mentally ill wife. His affair has made her into the broken shell of a woman. The movie glamorizes Ford's passionate affair with Scacchi. The love scenes are incredibly sensual. "Presumed Innocent" makes adultery look innocent.

"Presumed Innocent" has plenty of twists and turns. It's a guilty pleasure legal thriller. What do YOU presume?

Good combination of court drama and murder thriller
Added 6/4/2008

The beginning of 90's was full of court dramas and murder thrillers. This is a very good combination of both, which means it will attract the fans of both genres. A very good movie with a surprise ending. One of the best movies of both Harrison Ford and the legendary Alan J. Pakula. Deputy Prosecutor Rusty Sabich (Ford) is assigned to investigate the murder of a woman he had an affair with. All evidences are against him. Framed Sabich is desperate to reveal the real killer...so are the viewers! But believe me the ending will surpass all your expectations and anticipations. Charming Scacchi and the beautifully shot love scenes add so much to the film. Do not hurry to presume...
