Plot: Then professional potheads Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong teamed up for Cheech & Chong: Up In Smoke, which features the drug-addled duo on a road trip throughout California; that is to say, a road-trip they hope will culminate in finding some quality weed. Instead, a series of mishaps result in their respective deportations to Mexico. Desperate to get back to the states so they can perform in their band's gig later that night, Cheech and Chong unwittingly agree to drive a very unique car across the border -- rather than steel and various metal bits, the vehicle is constructed entirely out of marijuana. Back in the States and accompanied by two extraordinarily out-of-it female hitchhikers, the stoned group meanders about in an attempt to get their musical performance together, and narrowly escapes from local law enforcement agencies on numerous occasions despite their complete inability to realize they were being tailed to begin with. The incredibly low-budget movie surprised critics, grossed millions, spawned a series of lesser follow-up films, and cemented Cheech & Chong's cult-status among potheads across the globe. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

A comedy classic of the 70's!

Pedro De Paca (Cheech Marin) is a musician living in California who feels like his band needs a kick and he's a stoner. He meets a hippie named Anthony (Tommy Chong) as he decides to put him into his band and both are accidently deported to Mexico by mistake, however they smuggle a van of drugs on their way out of Mexico back to the states and picks up two lovely hitchiker women and are on the lam from the drug authorities.

This is the movie that started the whole Cheech and Chong phenomenon as back in 1978 it was a box-office success among audiences and critics. The film made Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong into movie stars including their two stoner characters as it spawned comedy shows, sequels and of course influenced a generation of stoner comedies for years to come after this movie's success for it's a hilarious and original comedy that you won't forget.

This special edition DVD includes audio commentary, deleted scenes with optional commentary, music videos, radio spots, featurette, and trailer.

Hey, Man!

This was an appropriate movie for the 1970s where long hair, drugs, wild clothing, war protests and just all-around rebellion was the "in" thing to do, although rebellion has been a part of society since Adam and Eve.

In this film, we have the famous Hippie "brothers" of the era: Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong ("Cheech and Chong," as they were known back then) with a story strictly about getting stoned (as we called it then.)

Actually, there are some very funny scenes in here, such as these two clowns smoking the huge, huge joint while driving down the road. Then, we see the car almost white with smoke and the two guys so stoned they don't realize they are parked. That, and a couple of other scenes were funny but overall it's predictable in the negative aspects: language (Strother Martin) , gratuitous sex and and the general irreverence of the 1960s and '70s "counterculture."

And...oh, yeah, the two boys finish every sentence with the word "man." Well, all I can say is the film had it's day, man, but is a bit dated by now, man! (But still funny!)

I can't believe I've watched this movie from time to time for 30 years now and it's STILL timelessly funny. The 1970's stand-up duo who sold thousands of comedy albums hit paydirt with their first movie, Up In Smoke. Followed by five sequels, this first film is considered by most to be their absolute best. And you didn't have or had to be in the "pot-culture lifestyle" to get the jokes either. A true comedy classic. Paramount released it first in 2000 with a couple of extras but now in 2007, a new Special Collector's Edition has toked it's way to stores. But is it worth a repurchase or should you save your stash?

At first glance this 2007 version's cover from the original 2000 issue doesn't look worth it, but trust me it's a vast improvement. First, the new menus are nice with new smokey animations, a strange-at-first CGI-like animated music video for the album version of Earache My Eye complete with the full original monologue, a quick video version of the movie where all you see is each time every actor says "Man" in it (trust me, it's funny), a couple of 70's radio spots, and be it slightly too short, an 11 minute retrospective on the movie with Cheech, Chong, and director Lou Adler. Even the movie's picture itself has been greatly improved, with an amazingly colorful picture free from any blemishes whatsoever. The 5.1 mix, commentary, and deleted scenes are ported over from the 2000 release, so this is one double-dip you can toss the original for.

Highly recommended for your stoner library, even just for the comedy-in-general one.
