Plot: Paul Newman plays Reggie Dunlop, the coach of a pathetic minor-league American hockey team. His career at a standstill and his marriage in tatters, Dunlop has nothing to lose by taking on a new group of players who are one evolutionary step above Neanderthals. Only when the team begins winning does he decide to get behind these players, and to encourage the rest of the team to play as down-and-dirty as the newcomers. Straight-arrow team member Ned Braden (Michael Ontkean) resents this influx of gonzo talent, preferring to play clean. As the film's multitude of subplots play themselves out, Dunlop does his best to keep the outraged Braden on the team. Slap Shot is the sort of film for which the R rating was invented: Its nonstop barrage of profanity and its raunchy action sequences are of such intensity that the film will probably never be shown intact on commercial television. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

A dull and often simplistic movie, one of Newman's worst
Added 10/18/2009

Paul Newman has had many roles where he played dynamic and complex personalities. This is not one of them; Newman is the head coach of a minor league hockey team that is suffering financially and about to be folded. Newman's solution is to turn the team into a goon squad, where the players now fight more than skating and the crowds are wild. The action on the ice has more in common with professional wrestling than it does with sports. Attendance soars and the team is now profitable. Newman is crude, dropping the f-word everywhere, including in a meeting where he encounters the female owner of the team for the first time.
Newman also has other female relationship problems, he is separated from his wife and they are both seeing other people. The simplicity of his approach to life and hockey is not attractive, although at the end, he wants to play the championship game as one of hockey. No more muggings for the crowd, he wants to make it a real game. Of course, Newman's team wins the championship but in the most absurd manner possible. The case describes the movie as "outrageously funny", but to me it never gets beyond the "outrage" segment.

Slap Shot 25th Anniversary edition

This has to be the greatest hockey movie ever. The acting by Strother Martin and Paul Newman is very good. This DVD adds the commentary of the 'Hanson brothers'. It's adult only content so watch it first before you decide if it is appropriate for your kids. If you have played hockey back in the 'old days' or know someone who has, this is truly a great movie.

Slapshot Disappointment
Added 8/29/2009

Being such a big hockey fan, I can't explain why I had never watched this movie. With 25 years of build up, I was really looking forward to it. Wow, was I disappointed. I didn't expect technically good hockey playing, I know it's a comedy, but to me it really wasn't funny either. Maybe 25 years ago, when I was in my twenties, I might have laughed.
