Plot: This feature-length story about the heist of $10 million in Nazi diamonds primarily rides on star Tom Selleck's popularity as TV's Magnum, P.I., (a 1980s show), since the plot turnarounds, slighted character development, and stock situations are not that engaging on their own. The setting is 1934 and Nick Lassiter (Selleck) has been strong-armed by the Yank and Brit governments into stealing the diamonds from a German agent (Lauren Hutton) -- if he can track the gems to their hiding place. Along the way, he travels through London of the 1930s -- marketplaces, warehouses, and watering holes that lend an atmosphere to his search. His lady love Sara (Jane Seymour) more or less stands around to lend support while the suavely suited-up Lassiter battles a crooked cop (Bob Hoskins), his real arch enemy. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

ONE OF THE BEST SELLECK MOVIES

I thoroughly enjoyed Tom Selleck as the charming and romantic cat burglar. Not only was the story interesting, but it had some kinky twists that added flavor. Also, the casting was excellent, all the characters were well selected. The setting in London gave the movie a very nice ambiance and the ending was a nice surprise. The total package was delightful.

I have seen this movie sometime back and always enjoyed watching it and it is not a movie that anyone under 13 should watch. All the characters are good in their prspective roles. and of course Tom S. rates high on my list of good actors. There is some comedy in it , but not much, but it still is an enjoyable movie.

Great old Selleck movie

I've been searching for this movie for years and finally found out it was coming out on DVD through Amazon. Being a VHS lover I searched Amazon for available Lassiter movies on VHS and sure enough old copies were out there. Thanks Amazon for providing the consumer a way to find out of print items.

Vastly underated

This is a much overlooked crime thriller, with a delightful combination of charm and suspense. Selleck plays a succesful cat burglar in London just before the outbreak of WW11, coerced into helping a brutally determined British cop, brilliantly played by Bob Hoskins, into stealing a fortune of diamonds from the Nazis. The Nazis are suitably menacing, Hoskins roguishly deceitful, and the finale has a clever and unsuspected twist. All in all, one of the better crime thriller's I have seen.

Tom Selleck, Jane Seymour, an Bob Hoskins have great chemistry in this movie and the twists and turns keep you glued to the screen to see what will happen next. I hope the "powers that be" put this on DVD soon!!! Do you hear me??

A Fine Movie
Added 7/13/2009

I saw this at the theater and several times after and have enjoyed it each time. The plot is good, the action is done well. The performances are really good with Tom Selleck as a guy nice as you could get and Gene Simmons as bad as it gets. Simmons' icy stare is perfect for his character. The only weakness I found with the movie as a whole was the young man playing Selleck's son in the movie. Not that he was a terrible actor, but I don't think he was the best for the role. As father/son, they just didn't mesh well, to me. Also, check out the minor cast players and you will see some future stars and even a future academy award winner in very small role.

The movie is set close enough to our time to feel futuristic even to today, but not so far that we can't relate to anything in the movie.

As for the plot, it isn't much we haven't seen before, that's true, but it's done with originality. The movie difinitely doesn't rely on special effects to carry the story.

I recommend this movie without reservation for a fun friday evening.

Classic
Added 6/27/2009

Tom Selleck in a part somewhat unlike his other rolls but still the highest quality actor. This movie is dated because of the props and sets that were available at that time but the story and script are classic Crichton style, and Kirstie Alley is still dazzlingly beautiful. In addition, you get Gene Simmons as the evil doctor, and a very attractive Cynthia Rhodes as Selleck's police partner.
