Plot: In a thought-provoking treatment of the deep-rooted turmoil of war veterans, debut director (David Nutter) has fashioned a fast-paced story about Vietnam vet Tim Murphy (Don Johnson) and his struggle to regain both self-respect and emotional equilibrium. Tim suffers from nightmares, and there is nothing his loyal wife Paula (Lisa Blount) can do to prevent them, nor can she do much to help him get a job. She is hampered even further by Tim's bad temper -- he flies off the handle at friends and family alike. One day, Tim meets a fellow Vietnam vet in the unemployment line, and the two quickly become good friends. When tragedy later strikes, Tim faces an important decision about his future on his own. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

cease fire a was great movie, but very poor quality tape
Added 8/27/2009

cease fire goes deep into P.T.S.D. and the results as well as the effects of war on the young people that were sent to fight it. the movie itself was very good, but the quality of the tape was really bad. this movie needs to be put out on dvd!

Vietnam Vet's damaged homecoming

CEASE FIRE is an excellent Vietnam Vet story. Unfortunately as of this date it has not been release on DVD. If you want this great film you'll need to try and find it on VHS. I would recommend making sure you get the high quality SP MODE version not one of those cheaper EP mode tapes. HBO Home video did a high quality released of this on vhs video.

80's Miami Vice leading man Don Johnson stars here as a Vietnam Vet struggling with his home life while suffering from post traumatic stress disorder brought on by the unforgettable horrors of war.

The film was actually based on a small play by George Fernandez. Its not nearly as well-known as other Vietnam war films that became a staple in 80's film-making. Aside from Deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now, it appears Hollywood tried to stay away from the Vietnam War conflict until the 1980's. It wasn't until then that they felt the general audience was ready to deal with these stories. This decade brought such important films as Platoon and Full Metal Jacket. If you look deeper into the list of 80's Vietnam War stories and you'll find Hamburger Hill, Good Morning Vietnam, Siege of Firebase Gloria, The Killing Fields, 84 Charlie Mopic not to mention RAMBO and that's just to name a few. Cease Fire is not even as well known as these however it is superior in many ways.

An unsung classic

This is one of the most powerfully affecting movies I've ever seen about the problems of post-traumatic stress disorder. The actors are uniformly excellent, particularly TV god Don Johnson in a tough role. Only two war movies have ever brought me to tears, and the other one was "Saving Private Ryan." It's that good.

Healing Movie
Added 6/4/2000

As the wife of a combat wounded Vietnam Veteran, I live daily with the affects of that war. This movie helped my husband and I to see what OUR lives looked like! It was like watching a movie of us! My husband was so moved, and helped, by this movie that he bought 10 copies, gave one to the "Vet Center" in Norwich, Ct. for the use of all vets, kept one for us, and gave the rest to his veteran brothers who are having difficulties like those portrayed in the movie. This is an OUTSTANDING movie ,and Don Johnson (and friends) gave a brilliant performance as a Vietnam Veteran suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This is a validating movie, one that all Vietnam Veterans AND their families need to see.
