A disturbing Dennis Hopper movie? Go figure
Added 10/27/2008
At first glance Cebe Barnes (Linda Manz) is an average girl with a happy childhood. She is made up like a clown while she sits on her dad's lap as he drives her to school one gray morning. That image is shattered when her father (played by Dennis Hopper) has her hold his empty beer bottle so that he can pop some pills. While he is getting high he loses control of his vehicle resulting in a head on collision with a school bus leaving dozens of children dead and him in jail for eight years. With dad in jail Cebe is left to fend for herself at school and on the streets. She has a home and a mother but mom isn't very reliable since she is sleeping with her boss and working all the time. When her mother isn't at work she is passed out in the living room since she spends her nights shooting up with her husband's friends. Pissed off at her mom and not wanting to be at home Cebe longs to escape and spends her time hitch hiking all across Vancouver. She loves to go to punk rock shows and feeds off of the aggression. She likes to get stoned and get into fights. There is a frightening scene in which Cebe accepts a ride from a stranger who takes her to a drug crash pad and gives her a fix. When she passes out he tries to rape her while a stoned woman in lingerie watches. Cebe has a monument to Elvis in her room. She idolizes the King as much as she idolizes her father. Their pictures appear side by side. Her father is eligible for parole and Cebe is hoping that once he gets out her family will get back to normal. Dad has a hard time re adjusting to life at home and both his and his wife's drug use has intensified. They are hopelessly addicted which causes them to not trust each other and argue constantly. What follows is shocking and deeply disturbing. The last half hour of this film in particular is very hard to shake. Hopper does a very good job as actor and director in rubbing this family's decline in our faces and forcing us to go along with them. It is very easy to see why this is one of Harmony Korine's favorite films as it has much in common with KIDS. After seeing that film I actually think this one is more intense. Linda Manz does a good job of showing the anger that comes with watching her parents just get deeper and deeper into their addictions. She captures the feelings of hopelessness in a way that makes it difficult to watch. The supporting cast include Raymond Burr as a social worker who is one of the few people who hasn't lost faith in Cebe and desperately wants to help her, and Don Gordon who plays one of Hopper's friends. While Hopper was in jail he looked after his wife and now that Hopper is out he has appointed himself his protector since many of the parents of the children who died in the bus crash are looking for revenge. This is a harrowing film to watch. Certainly not a pleasant experience but for any Harmony Korine fans or fans of KIDS it is definitely worth a look since it deals with similar subject matter and it is unflinching in its portrayal. Just like he did with Easy Rider Hopper directs a film that you know is heading in that direction but when it happens it is so devastating and shocking that you can't shake it.

Grim Fare, Not for the Faint of Heart or the Weak of Bowel

The ending is a welcome relief. Brings it up from the ranks of 'gritty b-movie horror-show', to near level of a minor classic. Socio-psychotic thrill ride. It will make our good hearts cringe in it's uncompromising vision of the world of man as a horrid stench bucket. The verdict: One viewing will suffice.

I got Out of the Blue on the strength that I enjoy the acting of Raymond Burr, and his performance was great, but the movie was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I guess that I like something to make me think in a new creative way that is positive or watch something interesting that enlightens me or has a mystery or is entertaining. Instead I found this movie dramatic, yes, stirring, sure, and very emotionally packed, but with WHAT? It was very disturbing and got worse from the beginning to the bitter end and I found no value it it at all as entertaining, but rather felt I had to ENDURE through it. It was a total waste of my money but moreover, it was a waste of my emotions. I DO NOT recommend this movie and thought that every other word being F was surely distracting also. I know it was supposed to portray a disturbed household but it did nothing for me to see this escalating roller coaster of emotion and if I'd have known I'd not have ever purchased it. I hated it and am going to throw it in the garbage and would not even return it. It needs to be out of the hands of anyone. It is gross, senseless and doesn't do a thing for your mind but expose you to discord and emotional upheaval without letup. It was horrible.

Dennis Hooper is a Hard Drinking Truck Driver who loses...

When I went to the theatre to see this 20 plus years ago (!!!) I did not know what to expect and at first it did not fit the description, but Dennis Hopper's directing and acting is a perfect back drop for Linda Manz's incredibe star performance. Way more "Punk" then most Punk films. And probably Dennis Hopper's most important film, and perhaps his least regarded.
