Plot: A man is torn between true love and the lure of fine dining in this romantic comedy. Alby Sherman (Elliott Gould) was born and raised in Brooklyn, where he runs a coffee shop. Alby has dreams of doing bigger and better things, and he works up the courage to ask his rich Uncle Benjamin (Sid Caesar) if he'd be willing to front him the money to open a gourmet restaurant in Manhattan. Benjamin, however, doesn't care for Alby's girlfriend Elizabeth (Margaux Hemingway), mainly because she's Catholic, and he makes Alby an unexpected offer -- he'll give him the money, but only under the condition that he breaks up with Elizabeth and marries a nice Jewish woman. The supporting cast features Carol Kane and Shelley Winters. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

A Jewish Classic
Added 2/15/2007

This is a brilliant, very Jewish, very New Yorkish, comedy that should have been more widely admired than it was. It is now hard to find. Like Elliott Gould's earlier black comedy masterpiece Little Murders, Over the Brooklyn Bridge has marvelous acting, an often hilarious script, and deep insight into the worst and best parts of human nature. The engagement party dinner near the movie's close is unforgettable. Sid Caesar should have won an academy award for it. Shelly Winters and Carol Kane are fantastic throughout. Hemingway? Well, she won't be everyone's cup of tea. In any case, don't this splendid movie. Especially if you're from New York. Woody Allen should be so funny!

Old Timers Shine

This film might have been the swan song for it's main characters; Gould, Hemmingway, Winters and Sid Ceaser. Incedently, a wonderful performance by Burt Young. Perhaps casting could have come up with a more appropriate shixa than Margaux Hemingway. Carol kane's character is a little to "pushed", fault the screen writer.

O.K. the film is frantic and perhaps overplayed but certain individual scenes were wonderful. A former Brooklyn boy like me especially enjoyed the scenes around Coney Island and the family squabble, in the new restaurant, is a gem.

Don't recall this movie ever being distributed to the theaters, perhaps the potential distributors thought it to "ethnic' if you get my drift.
