Plot: Screenwriter Nunnally Johnson adapted the novel by author Edward Streeter, whose work was also the basis of Father of the Bride (1950), into this domestic comedy. James Stewart and Maureen O'Hara star as Roger and Peggy Hobbs, a St. Louis couple with a large brood who desire a seaside vacation. Renting a cottage by the ocean is just the first step in a summer fraught with disasters, including a couch potato son, a shy daughter with newly installed braces, a pair of grown daughters who have married badly, and a local yachtsman with eyes for Peggy. Not to mention the ramshackle state of the shoreline abode, Roger and Peggy's new grandparent status, and incidents involving a sexy neighbor, a sailboat regatta and bird watching. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

A wonderful family film
Added 10/15/2009

Jimmy Stewart is the loving father that just can't quite get a handle on all of the things going on in his family, a part he has played more that once but to perfection in this film.
The family vacation in an old ramshackle beach house sets up poor Jimmy to endure one miss-adventure after another usually instigated by one of his many children. Of course his beautiful wife, Maureen O'Hara, is there to ease him through it all and it all works out in the end.
I love this film and laugh out loud at so many of the great bits especially the piece with John McGiver and Marie Wilson.

Always a pleasure to see Stewart movie. That man could do comedy as well as he did serious roles..

Great

James Stewart in this movie reminds me of any 60s father just trying to have a good vacation with his family. And Maureen as always is amazing.

Still Holds Its Charm
Added 5/7/2009

I fondly remember this film from my childhood. It was charming then and it's still charming after all these years. What a delight! It's light and breezy with endearing performances by the entire cast. Stewart and O'Hara seem so at ease as a 'married with children' couple that you'd almost swear they were married in real life.
There is some criticism from others regarding Fabian. I always found him irresistably cute. I don't mind his scenes. Not even the one in the pizza parlor. John McGiver and Marie Wilson add a touch of lunacy.
The laughs are mostly gentle ones that warm your heart. In fact, heartwarming is the perfect word to describe this little gem. Another Amazon reviewer expressed surprise that many people have never heard of this film. It surprises me, too. For anyone who hasn't seen it, watch it and feel warm and fuzzy all over while your funny bone is being gently tickled.

I have wanted this movie for a long time and finally I have it. If you liked the Waltons you will love this movie. Great cast. Beautifully emotional movie. What a shame they don't make movies like this anymore!

I received the product in excellent condition, but at this time, I have not had a chance to watch the video to check for the quality of the picture. If it is like everything else that I have ordered from Amazon, the film will be in excellent condition also.
