Plot: This forgettable comedy finds Joe Lightcloud (Elvis Presley) as a mixed-blood Indian with strong ties to his tribe and his father Charlie (Burgess Meredith). Joe tries to get government assistance for the tribe in exchange for permitting the local congressman to graze cattle on Indian land. Maime (Quentin Dean) is the object of Joe's affection, but they are under the watchful eye of her mother Glenda (Joan Blondell), who owns the local saloon. The Jordanaires back up Elvis on a few songs, most notable being U.S. Male by guitar-great Jerry Reed. By this time, Elvis was extremely tired of churning out movies with such dismal scripts. Later in 1968, he would make a triumphant return to live performing with his NBC television special which featured Jerry Reed's Guitar Man. Elvis was playing out the string of films set up by his controversial manager Colonel Tom Parker, who never wanted Elvis to be considered as a serious dramatic actor. Parker even went so far as to take Elia Kazan to task for even mentioning such an idea. It was such thinking that prompted the King Of Rock & Roll to return to the stage once again after an eight-year hiatus. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

I love the movie because its just like watching Elvis and the guys rough housing and having fun. Elvis hated doing the same scripts over and over but he loved working with the people in Arizona and you can tell he was having fun. If you want to laugh and just have fun with Elvis, this is the movie. Its a good musical comedy.

Far from Presley's worst

I was surprised to read all the bad reviews of this particular film. Sure, this isn't a 'good' movie, but when considered as part of Elvis Presley's filmography, "Stay Away Joe" is darn near brilliant. At least you can tell Elvis is having a good time doing a very different type of role in a more contemporary style of film. And there's even several genuine laughs in the movie. As far as stereotypes and what not...big deal. This isn't great meaningful artistic symbolic cinema. This is a low-budget 1968 Elvis comedy. To take offense at anything going on in this or any other Elvis picture is just insane. Nearly all of Presley's movies were lightweight, harmless and dumb, and if you didn't realize that, then steer clear.

ARGUABLY ELVIS' WORST MOVIE EVER...
Added 1/5/2008

... and Burgess Meredith, with the ridiculous make-up job in an attempt to make him look Native American, isn't going to fool anybody... why didn't they just get the real thing, like Chief Dan George?

With a Spanish stepmother who actually looks like Elvis and could believably pass for his real mother, why would they cast short, weaselly Burgess Meredith as the father??? For sure, the plotline should have been tweaked here and there, along with some sexier-looking chicks and a better Elvis soundtrack.

Elvis, Elvis, Elvis! Need I say more??? I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my dad. Dad's in is 70s now and had never seen this E. P. movie! I had though and knew how funny it was so I purchased it for him. We had an early Christmas and we all sat around and watched the video and we laughed and laughed at Elvis and Burgess Meredith, and all "Joe's" Elvis' rowdy friends in the movie. They were always destroying something!
It's fun and it's Elvis, what more could you want?
