Plot: Elvis Presley plays singer/actor Johnny Tyronne in this formulated quickie directed by Gene Nelson. While on a promotional tour of Pakistan, Johnny is drugged, kidnapped, and whisked away to a mythical Middle East country. Jay Novello plays the scheming Zacha who vows (for a price) to help Johnny in a world that is 2,000 years behind the times and sealed off from the outside world. With the help of Baba (Billy Barty), they hope to get Johnny back to the comforts of the modern world. Elvis shows off some neat karate moves, but he looks bored and resigned to the fact no one in Hollywood (or Colonel Tom Parker) will give him a serious screen role. Filmed on sets that were originally used for Kismet (1944) and Cecile B. DeMille's silent classic The Ten Commandments. As for the songs, only Mirage and Hey Little Girl are memorable. The generous Presley, perhaps feeling nostalgic, donated $50,000 to the motion picture relief fund after completing the film. On hand at the celebrity press conference were such luminaries as Frank Sinatra, Bud Abbott, and silent-screen veteran Chester Conklin. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

Elvis VS Ali Baba

Ok, this is definitely NOT one of "the King's" better films, but I still enjoyed it. I originally saw it when I saw six years old and loved it because Elvis was fighting with a sword...and frankly that's probably still the best aspect of this movie. Elvis demonstrates some of his modest Karate talents as well. He was a Black Belt believe it or not but in reality Bruce Lee would probably have cleaned his clock. Before you buy "Harum (sic) Scarum" be warned that this is also one of the two WEIRDEST Elvis movies ever made (the other one being "Easy Come Easy Go" where he plays a frogman and sings about Yoga.) The songs in "Harum Scarum" are not among his best...however if you watch carefully it looks like Elvis was having fun in this movie. He probably had a blast running around this old C.B.deMille movie set killing assassins with karate and saber. So, if you buy "Harum Scarum" remember...the movie is pretty bad, the songs mediocre, but the fun level is pretty darned high especially if you like watching Elvis kick assassin butt.

Anyone who could sit through this turkey and then give it the highest rating of 5 stars has my sympathy. You really need to see a doctor.

Elvis made a number of movies that weren't great. But this is the WORST.
Absolutely nothing to recomend it as a film. Though the soundtrack is very good.

Why?
Added 1/2/2007

Why they chose this movie to put in a box set is beyond me. I remember seeing this movie as a kid and thinking it was dumb. Where is Girl Happy? They have put out practically every other movie of his but not this one. It should have been put out long before Harum Scarum. The plot was simply ridiculous and completely unbelievable even for an Elvis movie.

Harum Scarum Fun
Added 8/31/2006

While this movie isn't an Oscar winner, it stayed in my mind for 40 years as one of the most fun Elvis movies ever.I eagerly awaited it everytime it was shown on TV; I'd never seen it without commercials, and was so happy to be able to! Performances were well done, Billy Barty was a joy.And Michael Ansara...deliciously bad. Men's costumes were pretty well researched, and actually fit in with the "two thousand years in the past" period.Womens...we won't go there. *chuckle* All in all a fun romp, even if Elvis' karate moves were obviously pulled.
