Plot: This lavishly mounted adaptation of the play by William Nicholson tells the true story of the doomed love affair between novelist and noted Christian scholar C.S. Lewis and a Jewish-American poet. Anthony Hopkins stars as C.S. Jack Lewis, an Oxford professor and successful author of the {~Chronicles of Narnia} series of children's fantasy novels. A confirmed bachelor, Jack's existence is an inward life of the mind. Somewhat detached from the world, his only social outlet is evenings out at a local pub discussing philosophy and religion with his fellow lecturers. Jack has been corresponding with a bluntly intelligent American woman, Joy Gresham (Debra Winger), who arrives to visit him, with her young son Douglas (Joseph Mazzello) in tow. She tells Jack that she has actually fled from an abusive marriage and plans to divorce, and Jack astonishes friends and family by agreeing to a platonic marriage with Joy so that she can obtain British citizenship. As their friendship deepens and Joy discovers that she has a terminal illness, the relationship between Joy and Jack becomes a genuine romance, and their marriage turns into a real commitment. Hopkins captures the essence of Lewis' spirit

This is probably my favorite movie of all time. C. S. Lewis was a remarkable man and a writer without peer. His work and life have inspired many to turn to God and deepen their own spiritual journey.

Anthony Hopkins, possibly the best actor of our time, has captured the essence of Lewis' faith and character. Debra Winger is surprisingly vivid as the one woman Lewis ever loved.

Unfortunately this movie has a limited release and not many people have seen it. I am happy that Amazon had it available, as I searched video stores for it in vain.

Shadowlands shines bright.

Shadowlands as a love story is deeply inspiring. Shadowlands as a story of faith is richly rewarding. Well acted by both Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger, the movie is at once touching and inspirational. The true story of the later in life coming together of a Joy Gresham and CS Lewis, one of the great apologist for the Christian faith, Shadowlands has it all. I cried, I laughed, I grew in my faith, I was thoroughly enchanted. I ordered two more copies to give to my grown sons.

Great and moving drama, great interpretation, if u want enjoy a romantic and human story of the condition of love an the delicate and sutil beauty of the human espirit, u must see this extraordinary film.

For those who have lost a loved one, this is one of the hardest movies to watch. You experience the pain all over with C.S. Lewis And you have a hard time not crying.

Fantastic - then and now.

I loved this movie the first time I saw it many years ago. It is just as great now. Anthony Hopkins is so attractive and sexy. This movie provides another look at the amazing depth of his acting ability. The list of friends who want to borrow my copy just gets longer as more of them hear about how great it is. (Somehow they all missed it when it came out.)
