An Interesting War Movie.
Added 7/15/2009
This is quite a good war movie, set in late 1941 when the U.S. enters World War Two. As this movie was made during WW2, I was expecting this movie to have alot of flag waving, but it's well made and I enjoyed it. It show's how overwelmed and under prepared the U.S. was in 1941 & 1942.

Entertaining but inaccurate and misleading portrayal of the US Marines stalwart defence of Wake Island.

A Great Movie Reference for WW2
Added 10/27/2008
"Wake Island" is a movie shot right after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and Wake Island. The movie, therefore, has to be taken in the context of the times - creating great anger against inferior Japanese forces and raising up the temperature of American audiences for the coming fight for freedom. You get some great actors of their time in the film - Brian Donlevy, Robert Preston and the everyman William Bendix (always the Brooklyn guy in the army). Well worthwhile for the World War II junkie and historian.

Wake Island
Added 3/8/2008
One of the great movies of 'defeat' done in the 1940s to celebrate the heroism of the American forces overrun by the Japanese in the Pacific in the early months of WW2. It is very much 'fictionalised' and introduces the stock characters and heroic gestures that fill Hollywood war movies up to the 1980s about. An insight into the mood in which WW2 was perceived at the time. A precious piece of history!

Guadalcanal Diary
Added 5/17/2009
As an old Marine, this is an excellent version of Guadalcanal. As an example blasting the Japes from their caves and the scene with the Marines in a bunker saying how scared they are with the on going shelling from Japanese guns is real.

Guadal Canal Diary

The is a great movie for a WWII buff. I saw it first in our local movie theater back in the 1950s and really enjoyed it. It is, of course, somethng of a propoganda piece but still a great movie to watch. I highly recommend it.
DVD quality was fine.
