Alien: 20th Anniversary Edition [Award Series]
Added 1/28/2010
When commercial towing vehicle Nostromo, heading back to Earth, intercepts an SoS signal from a nearby planet, the crew are under obligation to investigate. After a bad landing on the planet, some crew members leave the ship to explore the area. At the same time as they discover a hive colony of some unknown creature, the ship's computer deciphers the message to be a warning, not a call for help. When one of the eggs is disturbed, the crew do not know the danger they are in until it is too late. The dark, cold beauty of this movie will never be equaled.

Classic Deathtrap Suspense
Added 12/31/2009
This is horror the way it's supposed to be... this is classic suspense.
This isn't a movie with a lot of special effects - at least, not what you'd consider to be special effects these days. There's no CGI, no fancy green screen and computer graphics. The machinery and technology shown are old school. There isn't a lot of fancy futuristic 'gee-whiz' technology.
But it doesn't matter - the movie doesn't need that stuff.
Because this is one of those movies that actually has a plot, a storyline - it isn't just some sleazy slasher flick with blood spraying all over the place. This is real suspense and horror.
No matter how many times you see it, "Alien" will have you grabbing the edge of your seat. Even if you already know everything that's going to happen, you'll still jump. And that's what a good movie is about.
This isn't director Ridley Scott's ("Blade Runner (The Director's Cut)", "Gladiator (Widescreen Edition)", "Black Hawk Down") first effort, but it's one of his early ones, and the one that probably put him on the map. And he does it good. Just seven people in the cast, from old hands (Yaphet Kotto, Harry Dean Stanton) to fairly-new kids (Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright) - and Ridley Scott focuses the movie around them. The movie isn't about the special effects, it's about the people.
But you know about all of that already, unless you were just born. Terms and names from the movie have become legendary... Ripley. Facehugger. Chestburster. Sigourney Weaver in particular became well-known because of this movie and its sequels - so much so that she eventually did "Galaxy Quest" as a parody of Ripley. Kane was parodied in Spaceballs. Chestbursters appeared on "The X-Files".
Alien.
The movie has won numerous awards, and was even inducted into the AFI Hall of Fame.
What's different in this DVD version of the movie? For one, it's been remastered - the music and video have been hyped up a bit (though the audio is a little uneven in spots). There are some nice extras on this disc, and some turkeys (the outtakes are pretty much worthless, while the deleted scenes are interesting). The director's commentary is especially nice. You can try all the other DVDs of this movie, but this is probably the best one to get. If you like good movies. If you like class.

In space, no one can hear you scream

OK so whats with all the kids reviews saying this movie is boring. Did you like, fall asleep during the chestburster scene??! Seriously, this is the best movie in the WORLD!!!! I haven't seen ALIENS yet but i've heard it's better though. The suspense is NOT with a capital N, not boring! This is the awsomest movie ever! What really makes it freaky is that you never know if the alien has a complex human mind, or if it's like an animal. Overall, this movie is totally comletely the best movie EVER EVER EVER!!!

The movie that started it all is soooo slow!
Added 12/10/2009
I personally think that this movie is good, but very over rated. Yes it started it all for the Alien franchise, but in my opinion this is the most boring one in the franchise! It's too slow and nothing really happens until the end.
The good parts of the movie are when they find the ship, when the alien is born and the last 40 minutes of the movie...
If you are a fan of the Alien franchise, I suggest you add this to your collection along with the rest of the movies, but if you don't really care about collecting the entire set and you don't like dragged out dialog in movies, then skip it....
I give it 3 stars out of 5
James Cameron's sequel Aliens is a way better movie!

In space no one can hear you scream...

I have seen this movie before but I was still caught off guard and shocked by a few quick appearances of the alien. The one where it appeared next to Dallas actually made me jump. The movie was perhaps slower than the sequels but was building the lore of the alien for the rest of the franchise. I wish they would have a cut where the deleted scenes were included especially the cocoon sequence. The movie was creepy and scary, but a little slow. A decent science fiction film, and a classic that would only grow in the preceding films
