Plot: Produced on a shoestring $2 million budget, documentary director Nancy Kelly and her husband, editor Kenji Yamamoto created this romantic western based on a true story. Rosalind Chao stars as Lalu Nathoy, a young woman sold into marriage by her impoverished father in late 19th century China. Lalu is transported to the U.S. by a slave trader, Jim (Dennis Dun), on whom she develops a crush. Although conflicted, Jim fulfills his professional obligation to deliver Lalu to Hong King (Michael Paul Chan), a saloon owner in a rough Idaho mining town. Refusing to participate in Hong King's plan to make her into an exotic prostitute, Lalu keeps her dignity about her and wins the adoration of Charlie (Chris Cooper), Hong King's white, alcoholic partner. Despite the prejudice of the locals, Lalu becomes a cleaning woman and a successful laundress. Though she dreams of marriage to Jim or escape to China, she recognizes Charlie's admirable qualities after a violent incident that casts him in a different light. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

I remembered watching this movie when it first came out and liked it then. It's still a great movie to watch with historical value.

A little-known gem that deserves to be on DVD!

"Thousand Pieces of Gold" is a 1991 film that traces the life of a Chinese girl, Lalu [Rosalind Chao] who is sold into slavery by her father. She makes the dreaded voyage from China to San Francisco, and is then taken to a mining town where she is presented to her 'master' [Michael Paul Chan] who uses her body and intends to auction her services to men who frequent his saloon. Fortunately, Charlie Beamis [Chris Cooper] co-partner in the saloon saves Lalu/Polly from becoming a prostitute though she is still beholden to her 'husband'. It is only with the passage of time that Lalu finds her inner strength and eventual freedom and independence.

Rosaling Chao shines as the fiesty and strong-willed Lalu who yearns to return to her homeland whilst finding her bond with Charlie growing stronger by the day. This is a beautifully told tale that not only shows the hardships suffered by the early Chinese immigrants but also the blossoming love between two people of different cultures. I wish this movie would be made available on DVD soon.

Should be on DVD

Good story, great scenery and performances esp by Rosalind Chao and pre-Oscar Chris Cooper. The late Kim Chan had a small role. It is really outrageous that a quality film like this is not on DVD.

A Western with a Chinese twist

When this movie came out in 1991, I thought it should get the Oscar for best picture...but of course that would be unlikely for an independent film. Rosalind Chao is magnificent as a
woman who is literally sold to be a slave-wife who manages to escape this common fate because a white man falls in love with her and wins her in a gamble. For those who liked "The Joy Luck Club" or "Eat a Bowl of Tea", this is a good bet.
