Plot: Set amidst the burgeoning Seattle alternative music scene of the early '90s, Singles follows a group of twentysomethings as they try to find love and try to come to terms with their passage into adulthood. Arranged as an episodic comedy, the film follows a group of friends who live in the same apartment building and hang out at the same coffee shop. The central couple is Steve Dunne (Campbell Scott) and Linda Powell (Kyra Sedgwick), a pair who meet at an Alice In Chains concert and eventually fall in love. Singles follows the tumultuous relationship between Steve and Linda and their friendship with Janet Livermore (Bridget Fonda), who is trying to win the affection of grunge-rocker Cliff Poncier (Matt Dillon). The film also has a number of cameos, including actors Eric Stoltz, Tom Skerritt, Peter Horton, director Tim Burton and the film's author/director, Cameron Crowe. From the musical side of the fence, Singles features appearances by Sub Pop executive Bruce Pavitt, musicians Chris Cornell (Soundgarden), Pat DiNizio (Smithereens), Tad (Tad), and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, Jeff Ament, and Stone Gossard, who play Dillon's backing band, Citizen Dick. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Movie Guide

The Bottom Line:

A standard, paint-by-numbers "________ from Hell" film whose blank is filled by "roommate" this time, Single White Female features the occasional creepy moment and a good performance by Jennifer Jason Leigh but five minutes into the film you can pretty much figure out the entire movie's trajectory; don't make time for this middling movie.

"A Stylish High-Class Thriller"
Added 5/8/2009

"Single White Female" is one of the best psycholgical suspense thrillers. Debuting in theatres in 1992, the film hasn't really aged much, except for the hairstyles and clothes. The story is still prevailent today as the message here is clear: make sure you check out your roomate's past before having them live with you.
Bridget Fonda, Jane's niece, and the wonderful Jennifer Jason Leigh ("Dolores Clairborne's" Selena), star in this film about two young career women who move in together in a stylish New York apartment. Alley, the Leigh character, suffers from severe mental issues unbeknownst to the Bridget Fonda character. The problems Alley has becomes evident not only when she shows possession to her new roomate, but also at the point where Alley wants to take over her friend's life. A hugely suspenceful thriller that will leave you sitting on the edge of your seat. Jennifer Jason Leigh plays one of the best villins ever in the history of films in this piece and the writing and direction is impeccable. The scenery of New York is breathtaking as well, as the film was shot in the Big Aplle in the summer of 1991.
There is a remake of the film that was sold directly to DVD called "Single White Female 2:, but it is absolute trash. Buy this original as it is an excellent film.
The DVD is barebones, but it comes with the theatrical trailer, is in widescreen format, and is dual layered with both full and standard editions.

Suspenseful, But Better Back In '92
Added 4/24/2009

Here's another film I really enjoyed on the first viewing but lost its impact on subsequent viewings.

This interesting story was quite a topic of conversation when it came out 17 years ago. By now, it's probably considered fairly tame, and nothing that shocking or special. Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh star with Leigh getting the juicier role as the wacko, "Hedy Carlson." Character studies of people like her are usually entertaining. Leigh has made a career of playing totally immoral women. She also shows a lot of skin in this movie, something else she likes to do in her films.

Fonda's character, "Allie Jones," is no Mary Poppins, either, or should I say Fonda isn't exactly Shirley Temple. The movie shows several scenes of her having sex with her boyfriend.

The movie starts building its suspense about halfway through when Leigh - the roommate and admirer of Fonda - begins to lose her girlfriend to that guy....and decides to do something about it.

There really isn't a lot of violence in this movie, mainly just at the end. It's a good suspense movie, though, which builds and builds. Tha's why I gave it four stars because it does keep your attention, big-time, if you've never seen this movie.

This may save your life.

Let me tell you, this movie is a classic. I actually saw this movie a while ago and it always stuck in my head for no reason. I met a girl who was odd at first but she befriended me and I felt that she was kinda nice yet I knew there was something about her. Just. Something. I didn't know at the time of course because you can never foresee what life brings you. She started coming around more often and telling me her daily activities and what not. Till I started going out with her as a friend. Mind you she wasn't my friend as much as my coworker/friends Girlfriend. This girl has an abusive brother and would always escape to my house to get away from him. More and more I started to see that this girl had issues. She decided that she was going to cut her hair the same style and dye her hair the day after I did mine. She started to want to do the hobbies I currently undertook such as sewing, photography and baking. She started to go to the gym with me and I would hate every second of it. I clearly started getting flashbacks of this movie. She started to compliment me on my lingerie at the gym in the woman's locker flashing ensued from her behalf, she even bought the same lingerie I had. At that point I stopped going to the gym. I couldn't take it anymore. It was absurd. She would text me good night and everything. Finally I noticed that she was making any excuse why to go over to my house when my husband was working from home while I was at work with her now Ex-boyfriend. She would need to borrow a movie or a book of some sort. Finally I got fed up and came home. To my surprise they were having an affair. When I confronted him...all he could say was "Baby, I thought it was you." Yup, that's my life in a movie.

Some might say this movie is a little slow, but I love it. If you are at all interested in bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden or Alice In Chains - you should see this since many of the band members either perform or have cameos. Good balance of funny and dramatic moments. I enjoy the soundtrack for this movie as well.

It is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Although it was made a long time ago, it is still relevant. Campbell Scott and Kyra Sedgwick were excellent in their roles. Their feelings for each other were very touching. Bridget Fonda and Matt Dillon were also good. I'd definitely give it 5 stars. You won't be disappointed.

A Chick Flick For The Guys
Added 4/26/2009

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was 24 years old when this movie came out and living in Miami Florida. I had long hair (real long) and was dating an absolute hottie. So the weekend this movie came out I got dragged to this movie by my girlfriend. Actually it was a group of us, three couples and all the guys pretty much got dragged by their girlfriends. 24 year old, long haired guys into heavy metal music are not the type to enjoy a chick flick, so none of us were thrilled to be there. To make the movie a bit more enjoyable we were in a slightly "altered state." But this little movie won us over! And none of us were single at the time either. I also really related to the character of Matt Dillon because that is exactly how I was living my life at the time.

I can't add anything more than what others have said, as the movie works so well because it's not sappy, it's not forced, it's not cliche, and it's not corny. There was just something so honest and natural about the film. And even though at the time I was seriously pissed off about the advent of grunge music killing off the precious heavy metal I loved so much, I ended up enjoying the music too. This was real grunge, before the music companies turned grunge into top 40 commercialized crap, and before the clothing designers/manufactures turned thrift shop clothing into extremely expensive high-end designer wear. It really sparked my interest in Seattle and I remember wanting to move their for a few years after seeing this movie (never did).

So as my title says, this is a chick flick even the guys will like because it escapes all of the classic trappings of the typical chick flick. The acting and writing are top notch, as is the music and the city of Seattle itself. I have since seen the film in a non-altered state and it has lost none of its charm, originality, and innocence. This movie captures a period in time that was fun, innocent, carefree, fresh, and exciting, before the dot com bubble, before 9/11, before record high gas prices, and before the implosion of our entire economy. Not only do the 20 somethings of today not have a movie like Singles to call their own, they don't have much a future to look forward to either.
