Plot: Richard Harris was nominated for several awards (including the Oscar and Golden Globe) for his performance in The Field. The time is the mid-1930s; the place, western Ireland. For many years rugged individualist Bull McCabe (Harris) has been cultivating a small plot of rented land, nurturing it from barren rock into a fertile field. Now, however, the widow who owns the land plans to sell it at auction. The infuriated Bull shows up at the bidding, secure in his belief that none of his neighbors will dare bid against him. But Bull has not taken into consideration a wealthy Irish-American (Tom Berenger), who intends to pave over the land and bring new industry to the area. This is deep, very deep, deeper than you think warns Bull, as he sends his grown son (Sean Bean) to persuade the American to withdraw his bid. Armed with the foreknowledge that Bull's tenacity has caused heartbreak and tragedy in the past, the audience steels itself for the awful consequences still to come. Punctuating the storyline are the periodic appearances of the toothless village idiot, played by John Hurt. Originally produced for British television, The Field was based on the landmark play by John B. Keane, and directed by My Left Foot's Jim Sheridan. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

When will they put this amazing film out on DVD? I am shocked and enraged at the fact that this incredible film has not been released on DVD. Cinematography is amazing, the plot is amazing, the acting is for the most part amazing...I cannot wait for someone to realize this SHOULD be on dvd.

At Play in the Fields of the Lord [NON-USA FORMAT, PAL., Reg.2 Import - SPAIN }
Added 7/6/2009

I had been waiting for 'At Play in the Fields of the Lord' to be released on DVD for a number of years and was truly delighted to find that this movie was released on DVD in Spain.

I must admit that after receiving the purchased DVD, I was really disappointed with the quality. It must have been made from a copy of Video or something like that. My advice is do not waste your money on purchasing this import version!

very relavant
Added 2/8/2010

I find this a very relavant story.
I grew up on a farm in the west of Ireland. My family worked the land for generations.I saw the Bull macabe as a backward idiot who stood in the way of progress.I emigrated and thrived under the capitalist system.
But now to see the destruction of the natural world by the capitalist system, How it paves over good land, loots natural resources for the benefit of the few and through conditionalities brings famine on a massive scale, The bull mcabe and sitting bull seem to have a good point

Masterfully acted, but just didn't grab me
Added 1/24/2010

I watched this recently on IFC & I have to say, this movie was well done. The acting was incredibly well done & it was interesting to see how many of the actors I recognized from other works (Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, etc). The scenery was fantastic & initially the plot was interesting to me. Unfortunately the second half of the movie just didn't grab me like the first half did.

The basic story is that Bull McCabe wants to purchase a local field so his remaining son Tadgh can inherit the land. His son seems to rebel against the idea of living up to his father's expectations, especially after his older brother committed suicide & Tadgh has become the sole focus of Bull's attentions. Meanwhile the son of a villager who had immigrated during the famine to America has returned, with plans to purchase the field for his own ends. The pair clash with Tadgh getting caught in the middle as they move towards a fiery confrontation.

I did like this film for the most part & the film wrenched more than a few emotions out of my mother & I. It's just that after the plot shifts after a certain important plot element (those who have seen the film know what I'm referring to), the movie just seemed to drag a little. The ending of the film was fantastically sad, but I couldn't help but feel like the film could have been shortened by 10-20 minutes.

Still, this is a film that I recommend people watch if they want to experience the full scope of Richard Harris' acting abilities or if they are in the mood for a tragedy. It's not something that I'd buy or even watch again, but I'm glad that I watched it at least once. The acting in this film was just that good.

Not Your Field of Dreams
Added 9/13/2009

Bought this movie (based on reviews) prior to a trip to Ireland. DEPRESSING movie. It is not one that will make you want to see the Irish countryside or meet the people. (As a side note: both the Ireland and its people are lovely!) The only thing I could identify with was the hard work that went into preparing the land for cultivation by removing all of the rocks and mucking the land. The rest of the movie seemed to be poorly written fiction with "name" actors who did not measure up to their meager roles. This movie is best left in the jewel case or on the shelf.
