Plot: Night Game is a sweetly irreverent, low-key comedy which is also an engaging crime thriller. Mike Seaver (Roy Scheider), an ex-ballplayer who's now a homicide detective with the Galveston police, has to solve some vicious grappling-hook murders, somehow linked to hometown-wins by the Houston Astros baseball team. Engaged to cute, young, blonde concession-owner Roxy (Karen Young), Steve must juggle his romance with Roxy while at the same time watching out for her. Roxy is just the type of woman who the murderer stalks, brutally murdering them and leaving their bodies by the boardwalk where Roxy manages her concession with her mother Alma (Carlin Glynn). While the premise of the plot is somewhat hard to believe, the entire cast turns in solid performances as colorful, offbeat characters. The script, by Spencer Eastman and Anthony Palmer is well-written and highly amusing with a level of gallows wit uncommon in a crime thriller. The climax, although obvious to all but the most unsophisticated movie-goer, doesn't spoil the fun of this unusual film which is stylishly staged and sufficiently gripping. ~ Linda Rasmussen, All Movie Guide

'Night Game' a foul ball
Added 4/1/2009

In NIGHT GAME, a Houston-based, revenge driven nut who's specially equipped for homicide commits beachside murders of young blondes every time a certain Astros pitcher appears under the lights.

Roy Scheider is Mike Seaver, an ex-police detective trying to catch this serial killer. Karen Young as his girlfriend Roxy bares her chest in the first reel, while Richard Bradford as fellow cop Nelson seems caught in a profane loop. A few digressive sub-plots go unresolved in this very '80s, very ordinary, sports-themed crime thriller.

As of 4/09, "Night Game" was not available on DVD.

In Tom Stoddard's adaptation of John le Carré's spy thriller THE RUSSIA HOUSE (1990), Roy Scheider co-stars with Sean Connery and Michelle Pfeiffer. Cast includes John Mahoney, J.T. Walsh and director Ken Russell. (VHS) (DVD)

wasnt the best i've ever seen...but if you like a good mystery and sports, this isnt a bad film..didnt make much of a splash when released, but i find those who see it like it..roy scheider is always strong..enjoyed the baseball play by play track throughout that added to the plot...
