Plot: It isn't often that a popular TV series is inspired by a literary property that all but destroyed a particular industry, but such was the case with the weekly, half-hour horror anthology Tales From the Crypt. Most of the episodes depicted herein were based on stories originally published in the EC comic book series {~Tales from the Crypt}, {~Vault of Horror}, and {~Shock Superstories} in the 1950s. In these grim little morality plays, a number of nasty characters deservedly met grisly fates appropriate to their misdeeds. Examples included the compulsive neat freak who is cut up into little pieces and then tidily repackaged into carefully labeled mason jars, or the homicidal baseball player whose bloody body parts are used as bats, balls, and bases in a grim nocturnal ball game played by the vengeful teammates of his last victim. It was this sort of merry mayhem that brought down the wrath of professional do-gooders (such as the infamous Dr. Frederick Wertham) and their political co-conspirators, who demanded that the comic book industry immediately purge itself of all horror magazines -- and never mind these were among the best written and illustrated comics in the business. At any rate, the old EC comics had become classics by the time Tales From the Crypt made its HBO debut on June 10, 1989. The series, like the comic books that inspired it, was hosted by the ghoulish Cryptkeeper, seen here as a skeletal animatronic puppet whose voice was provided by actor John Kassir. Cracking delightfully gruesome jokes all the while, The Cryptkeeper introduced each episode, and showed up at the denouement to make a few additional creepy comments. In keeping with the standards set by the comics, the individual episodes dealt primarily with unpleasant people who were given their just desserts in an even more unpleasant fashion, usually with supernatural assistance. Several top filmmakers contributed their directorial talents to Tales from the Crypt, among them Robert Zemeckis, Walter Hill, Steven E. de Souza, John Frankenheimer, Elliot Silverstein, and even Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom Hanks. The casts were equally impressive, boasting the likes of Joe Pantoliano, Amanda Plummer, Kirk Douglas, Miguel Ferrer, Teri Hatcher, Harry Anderson, Teri Garr, Beau Bridges, Christopher Reeve, Mimi Rogers, Martin Sheen, Shelley Hack, Natasha Richardson, and Ewan McGregor. The seven seasons of Tales from the Crypt, totalling 93 episodes, aired first in uncut, uncensored form on HBO, then were rebroadcast with a few judicious trims and expurgations here and there by the Fox Network. The last first-run episode was telecast July 19, 1996. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Best of the Crypt
Added 12/2/2001

This is the best tape to get from "Tales from the Crypt" by far. "Split Second" is the best and by far the spookiest. Timothy Dalton is very good in "Werewolf Concerto" a very gross tale indeed. "This'll Kill Ya" is a great tale if you ever think about stretching the truth a wee bit and what may happen to you. These are all great episodes.

Possibly the best "'Crypt" in all of the series! Chilling!

This video contains three of my favorite Crypt episodes in the entire series! Again, I cannot speak for my fellow reviewer, but I watched these videos nearly two-dozen times! I will be reviewing "Split Second" , "WereWolf Concerto", and "This'll Kill Ya" , all included on this delightful video. "Split Second" is a very provocative tale starring Michelle Johnson. Set at a lumberjack forrest, the head cheif marrys a sultry waitress at a local tavern. No sooner than a few monthes later, a young man shows up and stirs up jealousy with the cheif. Soon, Liz seduces him (whooo, momma!) ; the cheif catches the two in the act. It seems down hill now for the young boy at the enraged man...or is it? A shocker. "WereWolf Concerto" is a classic WereWolf tale, "Tales From The Crypt" style! Taking place in a secluded lodge, a the WereWolf is deffintly on the prowl...but is there another monster as well? Timothy Dalton stars in this epic horror-fest. Don't watch it on a full moon! "This'll Kill Ya" is the tale of a harmless practical joke...but the receiver does'nt know the punch line. What follows is a wrongful urge of revenge. Dylan McDermott stars in this hypnotic, suspensefull tale that is garenteed to leave you thinking, long after the Crypt Keeper says his fare wells. This is probably one of my more favorite installments, and if I like it, I know you will as well. I suggest buying it today! Enjoy!

I HAVE TO ADMIT

THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEIR BEST TAPES, BUT IF YOU ARE A FAN OF TALES FROM THE CRYPT I STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU GIVE ALL THREE EPISODES A SHOT. ITS NOT THAT THE EPISODES ARE BAD, ITS THAT THEY ARENT GOOD ENOUGH TO WANNA WATCH TWICE. END

One of the Best Horror Shows ever. . . .
Added 5/9/1999

One of the best horror shows ever, with every episode worth watching. Spoiled is more humorous than other episodes, and Blythe Danner is excellent in Maniac, which has a great twisted ending.

Short but Oh So Sweet!
Added 8/17/2009

Now here's a series that taught the world a little bit about what you could do on cable television. Blood, gore, action, suspense and unfortunate circumstances happening to a bunch of people that just plain had it coming. There's just not enough anthology horror series' out there. And honestly, I always thought that this one should have stayed with us a little bit longer. Oh well. Behold the glory of the Season box set. Where we can revisit these timeless classics over and over again. And although this season is short, (only six episodes!), it absolutely does it's job. The crytpkeeper never looked so good. So grab you're favorite ghoul and hold onto your vomit bag, because this is good horror.
