Great Big Band BioPic
Added 11/22/2009
One of the best BioPics of a legendary musician/bandleader. Features all the real musicians that played with Goodman including Gene Krupa on drums, Lionel Hampton on vibraphone and Teddy Wilson on piano, plus many more (and Steve Allen has an uncanny physical resemblance to Benny himself!) . Uses all the genuine recordings and the screenplay provides an accurate, though romaticized, timeline of his rise to success. Chock full of performances of all the famous songs. Add a star if you are a big fan of Goodman and his music.

Steve and Donna...what could be better?
Added 8/18/2009
This classic is one of two must see music bio-pics, the other being "The Glenn Miller Story". And they share one under rated actor, Gene Krupa, one of the best jazz drummers of all time. He kills with his line about Professor Schepp. Watch it and see!

Dated, corny - wonderful!!!!

Although the film does indeed not have an entirely correct history, this movie always delights. I play it every year for music history classes always wondering if the kids will turn up their noses at the sentimentality of 50's movie making, but they always adore it and many become hooked on great swing and jazz music. What I particulary like about the film is you get to actually see the real stars of the era including Gene Krupa, Lionel Hampton, Teddy Wilson, Buck Clayton and Harry James. Look closely and you'll see a young Stan Getz and Barney Kessel, among others. One of the better films made about the swing era.

He can't help the way he is--and aren't we glad?

I understand the history in this story isn't precisely correct, but oh-my-god the music! Steve Allen, who made his film debut here, is only playing along with Goodman's original recordings, but he still gives an intensity and modesty to the role.
And again, the music. You've got a lot of the greats, including Gene Krupa, Stan Getz, and Harry James playing themselves. The film's a treat to watch, but worth buying to listen to over and over again.
