Plot: Dedicated to his mentors Sergio Leone and Don Siegel, Clint Eastwood's 1992 Oscar-winner examines the mythic violence of the Western, taking on the ghosts of his own star past. Disgusted by Sheriff Little Bill Daggett's decree that several ponies make up for a cowhand's slashing a whore's face, Big Whiskey prostitutes, led by fierce Strawberry Alice (Frances Fisher), take justice into their own hands and put a $1000 bounty on the lives of the perpetrators. Notorious outlaw-turned-hog farmer William Munny (Eastwood) is sought out by neophyte gunslinger the Schofield Kid (Jaimz Woolvett) to go with him to Big Whiskey and collect the bounty. While Munny insists, I ain't like that no more, he needs the bounty money for his children, and the two men convince Munny's clean-living comrade Ned Logan (Morgan Freeman) to join them in righting a wrong done to a woman. Little Bill (Oscar-winner Gene Hackman), however, has no intention of letting any bounty hunters impinge on his iron-clad authority. When pompous gunman English Bob (Richard Harris) arrives in Big Whiskey with pulp biographer W.W. Beauchamp (Saul Rubinek) in tow, Little Bill beats Bob senseless and promises to tell Beauchamp the real story about violent frontier life and justice. But when Munny, the true unwritten legend, comes to town, everyone soon learns a harsh lesson about the price of vindictive bloodshed and the malleability of ideas like justice. I don't deserve this, pleads Little Bill. Deserve's got nothin' to do with it, growls Munny, simultaneously summing up the insanity of western violence and the legacy of Eastwood's Man With No Name. ~ Lucia Bozzola, All Movie Guide

Clint Eastwood's Best
Added 1/31/2010

Clint Eastwood has always been the king of westerns, and always will be. That being said "Unforgiven" is a knockout. The movie is different from other westerns in the sense that it doesn't have lots of action and eye-popping gunfights. "Unforgiven" sets out to show the true, grim nature of violence and makes for a much darker, more realistic movie. Gene Hackman turns in an incredible performance. He easily establishes his character as an evil man without having to really do anything. Unforgiven is special to me because it adds a much needed human element to the western, as well as more depth. As for the product itself? The only real reason to get the two disc edition of Unforgiven is because it has been digitally remastered. The special features are just a bunch of documentaries. I do recommend getting this edition nonetheless because the picture quality is a huge improvement

Unforgiven

This is a great film that transfers to blu-ray excellently. The film itself is a wonderfully paced deconstruction of the Western genre. Eastwood as always simmers when he's on screen along with his frequent co-conspirator Morgan Freeman. Eastwood's character William Munny could easily have been an unpleasant and unlikeable character due to his shady past, but when pitched against Gene Hackman's excellent sherrif he shines as a beacon of morality.
The last twenty minutes of the film are absolutely excellent as Clint faces down the bad guys and allows the viewer to know exactly what kind of man they're rooting for.
A modern day masterpiece.
