Plot: Wind is set in the world of competitive yacht racing, where a young sailor (Matthew Modine) is intent on winning the America's Cup, as well as regaining the affections of his ex-girlfriend (Jennifer Grey). As the film opens, Modine chooses to race the America's Cup instead of staying with Grey. She leaves him and his team loses the race, leaving him devastated. Modine tracks Grey down, finding her with a new boyfriend, who happens to be an engineer. He persuades her and her new boyfriend to help him build a new yacht, which he plans on using in his pursuit to regain the America's Cup. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Movie Guide

Memories of 8-Metre and 12-Metre Racing
Added 10/4/2009

This is the most incredible filming of 12-Metre racing and the one on one racing for THE CUP. I crewed on an 8-Metre ("Thisbe") on Lake Ontario in the early '60's. This flick brought back the chills of a win and the tears of a loss. Anyone with the slightest background in sailing would love "Wind", too.

Wind, a review of the DVD quality.

Being an old sailor I have enjoyed the movie "Wind" for years. It was one of the very few movies I bought on VHS. The love story is mildly dorky but the sailing scenes are wonderful and Jennifer Gray is cuter than a bug's ear. That said, I hoped the new DVD of "Wind" would knock my socks off on my 46" Sony LED flat screen. It didn't, until..oops..I sprung for the Sony BluRay player. I reckon my hope for something that would fill the medium screen crisply were dashed upon the rocks of reality for 13 bucks shipped. Don't buy it hoping it's crisp when filling the screen on your big screen TV....UNLESS you spring for a BluRay player. Then it's HD good. I've learned my lesson on this. Now I have the "set" of toys, it's a good movie, clean and crisp, and better than ever at that size.

"I Come Like Water and Like Wind I Go" fr "The Rubiat"

As I grow older I notice that I am concentrating on watching the acting more than the story in movies. It was thus in viewing this movie. Matthew Modine is great in everything he does (What the Deaf Man Heard is my favorite). This movie is about the rather sweet love story between a young man and a young woman and his desire to be with her almost constantly. He has been chosen to be second on a yachting crew by and eccentric millionaire(Cliff Robertson) who will command the ship. They are after the Americas' Cup. Since he is second in command, the young man, puts the girl on the crew, where their affection for one another irritates a crew member and she is axed from the team. She leaves to go on with her life, frustrated by all the obsessions connected with running the perfect race. What the team members do not understand is that she brought special design knowledge to the project. She has made a study of aerodynamics in aircraft design and has been applying them to watercraft as a side interest. The team loses the Americas' Cup to Austrailia and the captain disolves the crew. Matthew Modine's character becomes convinced he can build a better yacht and captain it himself for the next competition to take the trophy from the Aussies. He searches out his long gone girlfriend for her design help and gets together financing for his project. Since he is captain of the crew, he then puts his female friend on it. When the race is on and disasters keep happening one after another, she is able to figure out the next moves where no one else can. The standout of this movie are the overhead shots during all of the races, the fluid beauty of the neck and neck racing shots. Nothing like it has ever been accomplished before. Matthew Modine is great, and very young looking in this movie. Exciting edge of your seat yacht racing.

"Wind" from Down Under

I actually saw this movie at a theatre in the US when it was released and loved it, so it was just a matter of being able to actually buy it, as the movie is unavailable in Australia. The story related to a time Australia was a force in America's Cup racing (before it became a farce) and ignited our country when Australia became the first country ever to challenge take the America's Cup off the US in the USA which (and goes down in history) was an incredible and unequalled feat in 12 metre yacht racing. The story (for me) portrayed our outdoor way of life and love of great competitiveness and also provided an in depth look at the great respect between our countries. The story line was believable and the actors appeared to enjoy their roles the story and action photography of the yacht racing including the close sailing action was excellent made the movie very exciting. Great outdoor action movie.
