Plot: An attempted black comedy, Getting In endeavors to satirize the cut-throat competition surrounding the medical school admissions process -- a struggle that in this case literally turns deadly. Gabriel Higgs is an aspiring medical student, not out of a great dedication to his craft but due to pressure by his parents, who expect him to follow the long-standing family tradition of attending Johns Hopkins and embarking upon a prominent medical career. However, a poor showing in the admissions test and several other mishaps conspire to place Gabriel on the school's waiting list. Desperate to gain entrance to the school before being disinherited, Gabriel takes to bribing his fellow waiting-list candidates to ensure his admission. But when the students at the top of the waiting list start turning up dead in rather nasty ways, Gabriel finds himself in real trouble. He must discover who is committing these crimes before he is blamed -- or becomes the next victim himself. Easily forgettable, the film is mainly notable for featuring early performances by future television stars Matthew Perry and Calista Flockhart, and for being the directorial debut of Doug Liman, who would receive critical acclaim for his second film, Swingers. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide

med school's a cut throat business

Getting In is a simple film from '94 about a kid, who doesn't really want to be a doctor--it's more a matter of family tradition--trying to get into Johns Hopkins and getting caught up in the murder of the other students on the waiting list. The story isn't all that great and Stephen Mailer's performance is weak. Kristy Swanson does a pretty good job--for her that is. There are two surprising cameos, Matthew Perry and Calista Flockhart, both before they became big stars. Maybe I'm too used to Chandler and Ally, because I felt that they weren't right for their parts. The real gem of the movie is Dave Chappelle's character. And Andre McCarthy plays a dark role, and surprisingly pulls it off rather well.

STEPHEN MAILER IS AWESOME

Anything with Stephen Mailer is good. It is such a shame that the main actor is the movie is kicked off the new cover. Calista and Matthew have 2-minute roles and get top billing!

Parental pressure forces this kid to try to bribe his way off the Waitng List and into Princeton University. Trouble is, another kid is trying to murder them. Lots of ghoulish fun and a love story that isn't yucky. Dave Chappelle is a totally fun computer nerd and Stephen Mailer is cute. Andrew McCarthy is spooky. Calista Flockhart and Matt Perry have small roles, but they are funny. Great for date nites or pajama parties. My gang loved it.
