Plot: Anne Rice's best-selling romantic horror tale about the origins of a centuries-old vampire inspired this popular, atmospheric chiller. One of director Neil Jordan's major Hollywood productions, the film stays close to its source material, retaining the frame of a young reporter (Christian Slater) interviewing a man who claims to be a 200-year-old vampire. The man, Louis (Brad Pitt), shares his story, beginning in 18th-century New Orleans with his first encounters with the charismatic and decadent vampire Lestat (Tom Cruise). Lestat converts Louis to blood-sucking and immortality, but Louis fails to adopt Lestat's cavalier attitude, instead tormenting himself with guilt over his new nature. The two vampires remain deeply, if reluctantly, connected over the years, while becoming intimately involved with others of their kind, including Claudia (Kirsten Dunst), a mature immortal in a young child's body. Fans of the novel raised numerous objections, particularly after Rice initially spoke out against the casting of Cruise as Lestat; further casting difficulties followed the death of River Phoenix, whose role as the interviewer was assumed by Christian Slater. Rice later recanted her objections, and the combination of thrills and gothic romance proved popular with audiences. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide

It's good, but not as good as the book.

This was a gift for another Ann Rice Fan. When I saw the movie, it was well done. The acting was a little over the top, but that's normal for horror flicks. The book was much better. If you order the DVD, be sure and order the book, too.

This movie is one of my long time favorites, so I decided to buy it on DVD for my little but growing vampire movies collection. A must have for every vampire film lover, like me!

Interview With the Vampire--On Blu-Ray
Added 1/16/2010

Bravo to all of the reviewers who took on the film in depth regarding characters and development in detail. The plot itself is pretty much as described on the back of the box--200 year old vampire telling his life story to a reporter he meets in a back alley, from the beginning (which is not quite how the book does it, but I digress) in which he describes the circumstances of his mortal life briefly, his transformation into a vampire by Lestat (Tom Cruise), and his internal struggles with what he has become. That is the overall gist of the story.

In any case, to review the Blu Ray: I own the Dvd version of this, and bought the blu-ray to further my attempts at converting over my movie collection. The Blu-Ray is a bit sharper than the dvd, as to be expected, but I was not dazzled. I saw no immediate difference, but was satisfied with what difference there was, as this is an older movie. However: if you're looking for special features: don't. Because this blu-ray does not really have them. There are commentaries from the actors, Anne Rice, etc, but I'm positive those are on the old Dvd as well. Nothing new here! It's kind of disappointing, because I buy Blu-Rays because I want to re-experience certain movies, and with no new content, there are no new angles to look at. In that sense, I'm disappointed.

It hadn't even been a year since a plantation owner named Louis had lost his wife in childbirth. Both his wife and the infant died, and now he has lost his will to live. A vampire named Lestat takes a liking to Louis and offers him the chance to become a creature of the night: a vampire. Louis accepts, and Lestat drains Louis' mortal blood and then replaces it with his own, turning Louis into a vampire. Louis must learn from Lestat the ways of the vampire. I thought this movie was wonderful. The costumes and the actors were impecable. Even though there is gore and blood, this movie is highly entertaining and I would highly recommend it.
