Plot: Director Ang Lee's follow-up to his surprise box-office hit The Wedding Banquet is another look at ethnic and sexual conflicts in a Chinese family, with meals as a centerpiece of the film. Master chef Chu (Sihung Lung) is a long-time widower who lovingly cooks large Sunday dinners for his three daughters, who view the meals as too traditional. Secretly, however, successful airline executive Jia-Chien (Chien-Lien Wu) loves traditional cooking and would like to be a chef like her father, if women were permitted to do so. Her older sister Jia-Jen (Kuei-Mei Yang) is unmarried and cynical about men, but she becomes attracted to a volleyball coach and eventually pursues him vigorously. The youngest daughter, Jia-Ning (Yu-Wen Wang), is a college student who becomes pregnant from her frequent sexual escapades. As the film progresses, the personal relationships between the daughters and their significant others change unexpectedly. ~ Michael Betzold, All Movie Guide

I often chose to read what others thought of a movie before I write my own review, and I generally gravitate to the reviews that are contrary to my own because I want to know what perhaps I missed or willfully ignored the first time through. I loved Eat Drink Man Woman so I had to read some of the one and two star reviews to see why others disliked it so much. From what I've gathered, the negativity underscores larger issues I have with so much of the crap that comes out of Hollywood. That a movie as touching, heartfelt, and lovely as this is seen as boring to others proves my larger point; movies like Eat Drink Man Woman aren't made enough in America and when they do get made, they are often watered down adaptations of grander ideas, streamlined for the short attention span Hollywood has helped create. In other words; in the absence of Seth Rogan's on-going juvenile antics or Saw-like torture, what movie is truly worthwhile to the typical American movie-goer?

Sarcasm aside, there is so much to revel in here; mouthwatering food, the artistry of its preparation, the need to follow our truest calling, the mystery of love, the tempestuous and conflicting nature of family relations, and the universal scope of all of these issues. Ang Lee delivers a delicious feast of humanity that satisfied my hunger for movies that value artistic integrity over box office receipts. True to the food theme of this beautiful work, for every hundred fast food joints, spread like choking dandelions across the landscape, there blooms one lovely flower of a restaurant where the food is expertly prepared and where time slows to allow the splendor of the moment to envelope you and open your senses to the totality of the experience. Eat Drink Man Woman is such an experience.

Eat Drink Man Woman has humor, wisdom, and grace.

Eat Drink Man Woman is full of humor, wisdom, and grace. I love to watch this film. I always suggest that you eat a full meal before you watch this motion picture. The savory dishes created by the father who is a chef in a major hotel in Taipei, Taiwan makes your mouth water and your glands salivate. I want to be in this film and enjoy a meal with the master chef. You will laugh and notice the wisdom of this wonderful motion picture. I only wonder what it would be like if I understood Mandarin. I get a lot of meaning with the subtitles. I am used to subtitles, however, I bet their were a few nuances that I missed.

Classic, fabulous, and a must-see

Ang Lee is a superb director who has captured family dynamics in modern day China. Whether you are a China expert or just starting to learn about the culture, this is a great way to experience the internal life of an atypical Chinese family. The story will captivate you, the ending will be a surprise.

I had seen this movie in the theatre - and it had English sub-titles, However, the DVD I received did not have English sub-titles and I don't speak, or understand, Chinese. I returned it and expect a full credit - unless there is a version with English sub-titles, then I will accept an exchange.

Unforgetable lesson in family bond
Added 5/1/2009

I first saw this movie 9 years ago while spending a semester abroad. Everytime I see this movie-and I have mulitple times since my first viewing-I think back to that most amazing and incredible time in my life. Most importantly I am reminded of the unshakable family bond that exists but is never really communicated amongst all families. I love the dynamics of this family because they are indeed a real family experiencing the ups and downs of real life. I loved how much I-a Puerto Rican living in America-related to a Chinese family. The movie is a great testament that regardless of who you are or where you come from we are human and we are share in the life experiences that being a human means. The movie brought tears, laughs and unexpected gratitude for my family's own misgivings.
