Plot: Overnight sensation Jim Carrey reprises his role as the eccentric detective in this follow-up to the runaway blockbuster Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. The sequel finds Ace on assignment in Africa to prevent a tribal war by saving a white bat sacred to both sides. Along the way, he nearly sleeps with a seductive African princess before her wedding, experiences astral projection with an enlightened monkey, masturbates, collects bat dung and, last but not least, is birthed by a mechanical rhino (much to the horror of an American tourist family). Often short on taste, the film is nonetheless full of good spirit and plenty of genuine belly laughs -- particularly during the fight scene with a diminutive tribal champion (Tommy Davidson, who demonstrates a gift for physical comedy equal to Carrey's). Not for every taste, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls is either hilarious or insufferable, depending on the viewer's opinion of Carrey's unique brand of slapstick and sight gags. Please note: the opening sequence may be upsetting to younger viewers. ~ Jeremy Beday, All Movie Guide

A Complete Farce In Nearly Every Sense

Though I consider the first "Ace Ventura" film to be perhaps my favorite comedy of all-time, "When Nature Calls" is nothing more than a shame to both the legacy of the first film and to Jim Carrey's career.

Likely rushed to the theaters (only a year after part one) due to the success of the first movie, "Ace 2" never even comes close to capturing the pure hilarity of the first effort, and (on its own merit) isn't even that funny overall. Whereas in the first go-round Carrey was able to do his crazy facial reactions and physical comedy that made him a household name, in this film (because of the very poor quality of jokes/gags) he completely overreacts to every situation. I never thought I would say that Carrey could overreact to anything, but he actually does go WAY too far time after time after time.

Though the first 10-20 minutes of "When Nature Calls" are moderately funny, from there the movie absolutely tanks. The first time I watched it, I actually fell asleep about 20 minutes in, as the jokes/Carrey were no longer holding my interest whatsoever.

Thus, I would not wish this film on anyone. If you want more of Carrey's best performances, stay away from it at all costs, as it will leave you wondering how/why he would even sign off on the script.

Close But No Cigar

The sequel to the hit film Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, When Nature Calls is better off being considered some sort of prequel seeing as how Courtney Cox is nowhere in the film and there are no mentions of the first adventure. Although it carries the name Ventura it falls short of expectations. The humor in this film is much more grotesque then the first including a scene alluding to Carrey masturbating. This is still a decent movie with rough comedy throughout. The first film is far superior in my eyes.

Ok I just dug up an old video of this movie and memories came floating back. When i was like 7 or 8 my parents bought the movie (oblivious to the rating) and i watched it again and again. Oh and after i watched it every time i started talking like him.

Man when i watched it now as 14 years old I got all the jokes. Their not that bad (if anyone watches Are You Being Served its about as bad as that)
its just so funny. I mean some of the non-sex jokes are kinda funny but over all its great.

Its a real family movie.

Jim Carry at his best.

Peace Out
