Plot: Balto is an animated trifle, based loosely on a true story from the 1920s, that may offer some amusement for young children. A live-action intro and outro set the stage for the story of Balto (voiced by Kevin Bacon), a stray who's half dog and half wolf, who is shunned as a half-breed outcast by both humans and his own kind. Balto does have some friends, like the goose Boris (Bob Hoskins) and two polar bears named Muk and Luk (Phil Collins), but he is particularly resented by canine pack leader Steele (Jim Cummings), with whom he is competing for the affections of Jenna (Bridget Fonda). He eventually becomes a hero when he guides a medication-carrying sled to a townful of sick kids in the wilds of Alaska. The film features a number of positive messages (subtlety is not its strong point), but it may not feature enough humor or excitement to keep anyone but the very smallest viewers engrossed. ~ Don Kaye, All Movie Guide

Why isn't this much more popular than it is now?

This isn't your average animated film. Balto is just as great as The Lion King, Fantasia, and The Land Before Time. It has a solid story (which is based on true events), a brilliant script (even for a family film), impressive voice acting, and some beautiful animation. Sure, Boris the goose is a bit annoying at times, but that's probably the only thing that's bad about this animated classic. I still don't understand why this isn't as recognizable as The Lion King or An American Tail. Maybe it's because of marketing limitations or something. Whatever the reasons, let's hope that people get to see this film and let's definitely hope that this will turn out to be one of their favorites.

I had the VHS version & wanted the DVD-It's one of the movies that really has a good story-Really loved it!!!

The vendor was great, sending the movie on time with no other problems. I would deal with this vendor again.

My 18 year old daughter loves Balto ever since she was little and wanted to introduce it to her 5 year old sister. They both enjoy watching it together.
