Plot: Adapted from what is arguably Jane Austen's most mature and subtlest novel, {-Persuasion} is somewhat more nuanced and restrained than the more frequently adapted {-Emma} and {-Pride and Prejudice}. The protagonist, Anne (Amanda Root), is, by the conventions of society, considered an old maid when she remains unmarried at 27. However, a second chance arrives when her former love, Captain Wentworth (Ciaran Hinds), returns from the Napoleonic Wars. The pair, who hardly speak throughout, are surrounded by the usual assortment of family members, friends, acquaintances, and distant relations, many of them what pass for stock characters in Austen novels. There's the social-climbing parent, the dour upper aristocrat, the scatterbrained younger relatives, and, of course, the apparently suitable suitor who turns out to be all wrong. Of course, Austen's protagonists are never dumb, but Anne, being somewhat older, is also a good deal wiser, and the characters around her accordingly take on greater dimension and subtlety. Naturally, this being an Austen story, all ends well, but the path is somewhat less straightforward than in other films adapted from her work. ~ Genevieve Williams, All Movie Guide

Not only were the characters ugly, they were boring, unrealistic, and not romantic at all!! This movie is definitely going into permanent storage!

Very faithful and Romantic
Added 9/24/2009

I bought this dvd after reading several reviews for it. I believe this is one of the most faithful adaptations of a Jane Austen book, especially when the book Persuasion focuses so much on what Anne Elliot's internal feelings are. Amanda Root does so much with her facial expressions to convey what she is feeling at the moment. Ciran Hinds does a brilliant job as Captain Wentworth. This movie is definitely worth the time and money spent on it. True, it isn't flashy like many Hollywood movies and there were times when I had to turn up the volume but other than that, this is a very enjoyable film. Even my husband liked it :). I definitely put this one on par with the BBC Pride and Prejudice version that came out in 1995 with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle.

Don't waste your time
Added 9/24/2009

I decided to watch this DVD becasue all those good reviews about it. However, I sensed that this movie wasn't good just shortly after the 15 minutes of watching it. I persuaed myself to hang on but after an hour of watching, I couldn't bear it anymore. I didn't even bother to finish. Wish I could get that one hour back.

I am Ok with the ugly actors and actresses but their poor acting plus their unpleasant appearances really put me off. The lead actress has this tension in her eyes all the time. Others are over acting as well. Since I didn't read the novel, one part of the movie just didn't make sense to me until I read other negative reviews here after watching this movie. So it shows other reviewers experience the same thing (I try not to reveal any storyline in my reviews so you can experience yourself and make a fair judgement). Don't understand why people give 5 or 4 stars to this movie.

One lesson I learn from this movie and also another one (the cast of that one actually are all beautiful faces without conveniencing story or acting) - read the negative reviews on Amazon first before ordering any DVDs. Before, I didn't know how to check reviews and thought I had to go through all the reviews in order to get a fair idea about a movie. But, that will take so much time to check each single review. Now I know you just need to click on the "1 star" section of the score bars. Then, "2 star" and so on. That's how you check the negative reviews immediately to see why people think a particular movie doesn't worth your time.

A Different Ending Written by Austen
Added 9/14/2009

I gave this five stars because the writers used a chapter discarded and rewritten by Austen. Well, Austen's original chapter worked rather well on screen. If you want a copy of this chapter, go to The Gutenberg Project and download the biography of Jane Austen by one of her nephews. The makers of this movie were quite respectful to Austen. There are some points which I think could have been done better. Mr. Elliot's story differed quite a bit from the original. I didn't see the need and indeed, this rewrite detracted from the film. Amanda Root as Anne Elliot is perfection itself. All things considered, this is a solid production but the gold standard has yet to be made.
