Plot: An intense film about time travel, this sci-fi entry was directed by Terry Gilliam, a member of the comedy troupe Monty Python. The film stars Bruce Willis as James Cole, a prisoner of the state in the year 2035 who can earn parole if he agrees to travel back in time and thwart a devastating plague. The virus has wiped out most of the Earth's population and the remainder live underground because the air is poisonous. Returning to the year 1990, six years before the start of the plague, Cole is soon imprisoned in a psychiatric facility because his warnings sound like mad ravings. There he meets a scientist named Dr. Kathryn Railly (Madeleine Stowe) and Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt), the mad son of an eminent virologist (Christopher Plummer). Cole is returned by the authorities to the year 2035, and finally ends up at his intended destination in 1996. He kidnaps Dr. Railly in order to enlist her help in his quest. Cole discovers graffiti by an apparent animal rights group called the Army of the Twelve Monkeys, but as he delves into the mystery, he hears voices, loses his bearings, and doubts his own sanity. He must figure out if Goines, who seems to be a raving lunatic, holds the key to the puzzle. ~ Michael Betzold, All Movie Guide

I came across this DVD in the local public library, I'm a fan of scifi but didn't know about this movie. It was the collector's edition I saw.

This film really blew me away! I hesitated in seeing this film, I was afraid it would be like seeing a movie about HIV/AIDS, or about the Andromeda Strain. I left it on the shelf every time I saw it in the library, several times. But I finally decided to go for it, and now I'm really glad I watched it. It's the kind of movie that stays with you a bit after you've watched it.

I'm deaf and the closed captions worked just fine. However, any atmosphere or intended resonance from music in the film is missed in the captions. The captions never says anything if any music plays or what its mood might be. It is because of another review that I realized the music playing in the empty store near the start of the film doesn't come across in the captions at all. But missing this doesn't appear to have really affected that much my enjoyment of this film as a deaf person.

It's Gilliam, so you know what it's like.

Dystopian, but in an angry and pointless way. Great acting by a stellar cast. Brad Pitt should have won an Academy Award. But Gilliam ruined it with his trademark film noir style, bleak, sarcastic, and dull. Tediously dull. Cheap production values. And to call this science fiction insults all real science fiction movies. Avoid at all costs. Hang with some bums under an overpass in the winter and you'll have a sense of what you missed plus you will have a better time.
