Plot: Actor/director Forest Whitaker (Waiting to Exhale) helmed this romantic drama about a one-time high-school beauty queen who returns to her hometown of Smithville, TX. The Steven Rogers screenplay begins in Chicago, where blonde Connie (Rosanna Arquette, uncredited) appears on a trashy daytime talk show and tells a nationwide TV audience about her affair with the husband of her best friend, Birdie Pruitt (Sandra Bullock). Walking into the ambush, Birdie is paraded forth for a public humiliation as Connie's claim is confirmed by husband Bill (Michael Paré). Birdie and her young daughter, Bernice (Mae Whitman), then move back to Texas to live with Birdie's eccentric mother, Ramona (Gena Rowlands), a taxidermist who has filled the house with stuffed animals. Since most of Smithville saw the TV show, embarrassment keeps Birdie sitting around the house in her pajamas; however, her moment of glory as the homecoming Queen of Corn has not been forgotten by handyman Justin Matisse (Harry Connick Jr.), the first guy who kissed her back in high school, so a romance soon begins. Just give hope a chance to float up and it will, says Birdie. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide

Love and Magic
Added 10/15/2009

I searched and found this wonderful movie on DVD. This is a story of life, love lost and in the possibilities that life and a touch of magic, could bring a new future. The DVD arrived in excellent condition, although I don't like the type of case it came in, but that does not take away from the wonderful and wistful feeling that the movie leaves inside me after I watch it.

Love this movie. It's one of my favorites. It was accurately described and when I sent an email asking where it was they emailed me back quickly. However it took 3 1/2 weeks to get here which is a really long time. But..... it did finally get here.

THIS MOVIE IS MOSTLY FOR WOMEN, BUT IT IS A FUN AND ENCHANTING STORY AND THE SCENERY AND PLACE WHERE THIS MOVIE WAS FILMED REALLY IS BEAUTIFUL...... A VERY QUAINT TOWN FILMED ON FRIDAY HARBOR IN MAIN. YOU WANT TO GET UP AND MOVE THERE! THE HOUSE IS BREATHTAKING.....I FOUND IT THE KIND OF MOVIE THAT I COULD WATCH OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN....IT WAS FUN AND HAD A BIT OF EVERYTHING IN IT....NOT TO MENTION TWO BEAUTIFUL ACTRESSES, BULLOCK AND KIDMAN...STOCKARD CHANNING AND PIPER LAURIE ARE PERFECT AS THE AUNTS. IT IS THE BEST MOVIE ABOUT WITCHES I HAVE EVER SEEN....I DON'T BELIEVE IN DABBLING IN WITCHCRAFT BEING A CHRISTIAN, YET I FOUND MYSELF SPELLBOUND AND CAPTIVATED...LOVED THE MUSIC, TOO.....GOOD MOVIE TO WATCH WITH THE GIRLS!!!

I CAN'T BELIEVE THE PEOPLE ON THIS SITE WHO ARE DISSING THIS MOVIE...THEY MUST HAVE NO REAL SENSE OF FANTASY!

ONE BIG QUESTION??? WHY HASN'T THIS FILM COME OUT ON BLUE RAY????

an easy favorite

I adore movies about witches, they make me more imaginative and confident. some people who reviewed this movie before i got here reminded me of the quote "there's a little witch in all of us". indeed it's true, this is one movie that will help you discover that. very human, very witchy, very fun!

terrific cast and music. very well done!

So NOT "just another chick film".
Added 9/11/2009

Husbands and boyfriends, relax; when your Significant Other pops this disc into the player, you won't have to pretend to be awake through it, because this is that rarest of entertainments, a chick-film guys can enjoy without worrying about sleepwalking through a redecoration of the guest bedroom.
First off, it has great fenale leads - not to mention being REAL easy on the eyes. It's got a fun, at times creepy plot with a backstory that's maybe even a little disturbing (careful who you fall for); it also boasts a great Good Guy men can relate to, a GREAT bad guy men would rather not admit we can be like, and it's even got a pretty decent good vs. evil climactic battle.
If you're going to spend Sunday watching football, you won't feel you wasted your Saturday night watching this with your wife or girlfriend. Heck, it's okay; you can even admit you liked it. :-)

Pleasant but nothing special
Added 10/16/2009

There's nothing to hate in this film, except maybe the little girl, so I give it three stars. It boasts a fine cast but the script is so sappy and predictable that it doesn't make good use of them. I have liked Sandra Bullock in everything else I've seen her in but here she seems awfully lackluster. Harry Connick Jr is wonderful to look at. Again his part is so goofy; he had a crush on the high school star and he's still worshipping her. There's nothing to believe that he has grown since high school or that he sees her as an adult--not just the girl he idolized back then. So we're supposed to believe that this will be the romance that will work for them, unlike the marriage she's just left. It's not very realistic but it is rather pleasant and there's nothing to really hate here...except the daughter. Someone make a count of how many 10 year old girls written into movie scripts who either have freckles, frizzy hair or glasses and terrible names, who we are supposed to adore because they are so uncute. Enough, already!

Gena Rowlands is always fine and it's a pleasure to see her. Again, too bad this good cast didn't have better material to work with.

CAN WE GO HOME AGAIN?
Added 9/14/2009

Is it possible to go home again and find happiness? Birdie is about to find out. Having been invited on a TV reality show, she has no clue her best friend is about to tell her she's having an affair with her husband...yes, right there in front of thousands of viewers. What a shock!

Birdie leaves her husband, and with her young daughter, Bernice, returns to her southern mother's house to live. Gena Rowlands plays a delightful role as Momma; Harry Connick Jr. as a handsome, love-struck boyfriend; and Sandra Bullock is as great as ever, in her role as the devastated, Birdie. AND the movie has one of the best country music soundtracks I've heard.

My friend recommended this, as one of her favorites. I absolutely loved it!

Love this movie

This is one of my all time favorites. The chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Harry Connick Jr was great. The beginning was a bit unbelievable but the rest of the movie was just great! It will make you laugh, cry and hope. Good movie.
