Plot: A case of mistaken identity forces a pair of lounge singers to pose as safecrackers in this farce. Sam (Sam Rockwell) and Eddie (Steve Zahn) are hapless musicians; Frank (Mark Ruffalo) and Mitchell (Josh Pais) are expert safecrackers. But when local Jewish gangster Big Fat Bernie Gayle (Michael Lerner) dispatches his henchman, Veal Chop (Paul Giamatti), to trick the safecrackers into service, the hapless Veal Chop can't tell the difference. In the end, Sam and Eddie are forced to go along with Veal Chop's mistake and perform three separate robberies for the imposing Big Fat Bernie. During their very first mission -- to rob the safe of local fence Good Stuff Leo (Harvey Fierstein) -- they're apprehended by Hannah (Christina Kirk), Leo's affable, deadpan daughter. Hannah lets the guys go, but sparks fly between her and Sam. It just so happens, however, that real safecracker Frank is her ex-boyfriend, and that she's sworn off dating criminals for life. The coincidences, double crosses, and unlikely romance culminate in the bar mitzvah of Bernie's son, Little Big Fat Bernie (Michael Schmidt), whose present is the Stanley Cup -- the actual hockey trophy -- which was stolen from Good Stuff Leo by the reluctant Sam and Eddie. Shown at {~the 1998 Sundance Film Festival}, Safe Men marked the writing and directing debut of future Meet the Parents and Zoolander scribe John Hamburg. The film also gave a pre-stardom Mark Ruffalo one of his first featured roles. Sam Rockwell and Josh Pais previously appeared together in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie. ~ Brian J. This low budget comedy is one of my all-time favorites. Giamatti steals the screen as "Veal-Chop" ("Da-Chop"). Don't let this one go by.... I have two DVD copies and VHS.

disappoinment

expected a good comedy, but the movie fell short of my expectations. A good premise developed poorly. Not as funny as it could be.
Some witty dialogue (the description of what a fence is) the majority was rather lame and not funny.
Would not recommend.

Sweet 'stache, man

I saw this perhaps 5 years ago on IFC. It is flat out hilarious. How can I begin to describe a plot that involves the mob, trauma-inducing flammable pants, a stolen Stanley cup, sweet 70's style mustaches, Jewish B boys, and a heartsick bankrobber? Well, I can't. If you are a fan of twisted, stupid movies, this is made for you

Sweet Stache!

This is a great underrated comedy cult classic gem from Director John Hamburg (who also wrote and directed Along Came Polly, and wrote "Meet The Parents", "Zoolander" & "Meet The Fockers") This film has amazing acting and comedy and the writing is superb. A great flick that never gets old. Should Be Required Viewing For All. The extras are also great including hilarious commentary with John Hamburg and actors Sam Rockwell and Steve Zahn. One interesting part in the commentary was when they said that Marilyn Manson came up to Mark Ruffalo at a party and said "Sweet Stache!". I guess he's also a big fan of the movie. Also includes some cool deleted scenes and director John Hamburg's student film "Tick".

Ok, this is by far one of the funniest movies ever. The cast and writing are amazing. My husband introduced this movie to me when we were first dating. We actually wore the VHS out from too many viewings! Very glad it's on DVD now.
