Plot: Patrick Marber's acclaimed stage drama about the romantic interactions of four people has been given a reverent screen adaptation by director and producer Mike Nichols. Dan (Jude Law) is a writer in London who wants to finish a novel, but in the meantime supports himself by writing obituaries. One day he chances upon Alice (Natalie Portman), a beautiful young American expatriate, working as a stripper, when he sees her get hit by a car. Alice immediately falls for Dan, and gives him her love without reservation. Dan is initially enchanted with Alice, and returns her affection, but while she inspires him to write his novel (based on her life), her neediness begins to wear on him. Anna (Julia Roberts) is a photographer who is hired to take a portrait of Dan for the dust jacket of his book; Dan is attracted to her easy confidence, and while the two of them flirt, Anna soon (inadvertently through Dan's playful machinations) meets Larry (Clive Owen), a dermatologist, and marries him. Dan can't get Anna out of his mind even though she's married, and the two become lovers, but Dan is frustrated by the fact that Anna is reluctant to leave Larry for him. Patrick Marber wrote the screenplay for this adaptation of {+Closer}; it was the playwright's first feature-film credit. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

When I first watched this movie I loved it, so I got myself a copy.

Remarkably Awkward
Added 7/11/2009

The best thing about this DVD turned out to be the "extras". Damien Rice performs the film's theme sound "The Blower's Daughter", a beautiful MTV type clip set on an ocean beach. Damien serenades a beautiful woman, with "unrequited love" written all over it.

The four actors in this DVD are great on their own, in other films. Closer, however, proved to me that great actors can deliver stilted, awkward lines if a script is poorly written enough, and if the direction also adds salt (to the wound). These four very handsomely, beautiful people end up acting out a "modern love story" so neurotic that the-new-twist-on-the-love story just fizzles out. It wasn't so bad that I stopped watching it, though, I did laugh at the unbelievably artificial lines.

My favorite movie of all time.

When asked what my favororite movie of all time is, I always name this movie. I then explain it is a drama, at which point my male friends stop listening, because they assume "drama" means "romance."

While I would possibly call Closer a love story, I doubt you'll ever manage to find a less ROMANTIC love story.

Cheating, lies and secrets are the heart of this story, but as the lives of the main characters are followed I am captivated every second.

My favorite character was Natalie Portman's Alice. I love her. She is an extremely interesting character.

Actually, they're all pretty interesting. Or perhaps what is interesting is the way the characters are woven together.

Whatever they did when they made Closer, they did it right.

If you're in the mood for a light, fun romance, don't put this DVD in.
If you're in the mood for a more dramatic but honest take on the games "love" plays on us, definitely watch Closer!

a raw look into relationships
Added 5/14/2009

I love this film. I love it because of it's cutting dialogue and it's dysfunctional characters which are superbly portrayed by a stunning cast. A study of the human heart, Closer shows the intertwined relationships of two couples, forced into mingling by the faults of others. As much as I hate to witness a train wreck, Closer is actually one of those films I'm able to watch over again because it's simple human error, not some tragedy. It's beautifully acted, especially by Portman and Owen. Portman's character shines above the rest as Jane, a strong girl who finds resolution through heartache. For peeps who don't mind the dirt and grit with life sometimes, check this one out.
