I actually give this game 3 1/2 stars.
Added 9/2/2008

I got this game for the sake of the update on the players from previous years, as they change in the real NBA from year to year. So, that part is cool. Most of the graphics in this game are cool and very realistic, except for the logos on the arena floors. Since when do the logos have circles around them? Weird.

I like the ideas of the animations, but they need work. For example, sometimes, players seem to celebrate when they get fouled. Also, when they sit down, it looks like they stick their tongues out.

The commentary is very repetitive and can get quite old. Also, if you like rap, which I think is terrible, you'll love the music in this game. (Yes, I realize this review isn't supposed to be concentrated on musical taste, but it's part of the game.)

This game is pretty easy, so if you like a challenge, look for a different game. Also, I can't figure out how to save the season mode.

The things I like most about this game is that it's very addictive, and the players themselves look really good. I also like the little halftime report part. Very realistic, but still, the commentary is a factor.

Flawed but good overall

NBA 2k7 is probably one of the best sports games for PS2. The graphics are fairly nice, and the gameplay is amazing. Here are some pros and cons:

Pros
- rosters are pretty much updated and the player ratings are accurate
- assiociation mode is really fun
- love the situation mode as well (recreate kobes game 4 suns buzzer beater)
- gameplay is smooth for ps2 not much choppiness
- team sliders make things more realistic (suns and warriors would have fast game tempo but teams like spurs would slow down)
- create up to 20 players!

Cons
- when playing against the CPU, AI isnt very smart
- CPU goes out of bounds a lot
- CANT CHANGE JERSEY #
- doenst change shoes when traded to a different team (if a jazz player with blue shoes goes to lakers with yellow, its just like a laker with blue shoes...)
- AI is somewhat easy ( i can easily beat hall of fame diffuculty)

overall this game is really good if u ignore all those AI problems because hey, is only ps2 wat u expect??
i suggest buying it if ur a true nba fan with a ps2 hanging aruond
if u have an xbox 360 or ps3, definately save money for nba 2k8 for those instead of this though

GREAT GAME!

I held off on getting this game for two reasons: 1. I was going through too many PS2 controllers that would get stuck R and L buttons, and 2. I had a previous NBA2K game (I think it was 06) that would freeze all the time.

After going to numerous gamee sites and reading reviews, I elected to give NBA2K7 a try and I'm sure glad I did. I bought a used version and after playing it, felt it would have been well worth the price it was when it first came out.

Before I go into all the praise I have for the game, let me tell you that if you're not used to the controls, be patient with yourself. I also recommend adjusting the sliders if you're having lots of trouble.

What I like best:

The gameplay is extremely realistic. Different teams play different ways and will play to their character and those on the the team.

Your team will not always perform the same way. They can be on a tear where everything seems to drop and then go through a shooting slumpp.

Defense was a focus when they made this. I love D, so it's right up my alley. Learn to give yourself space between your guy and the ball handler or you'll be burned by a fake and drive every time.

Good trades are possible and I suggest building a solid bench because injuries will occur.

Timeouts and substitutions are automatic and at realistic times, though you can do them yourself, as well.

Commentary is very good and pertinent to your team and your players.

Menus are easy to work with once, just like with the controls, you get used to them.

Players look so much like the real ones it's almost scary. This is especially noticable on the closeups.

Cons:

To have any realistic level of comppetition without just selecting one of the best teams, the sliders must be adjusted and then readjusted or you win too easily.

Pitty-pat fouls can be called but this is actually balanced out by the charges and fouls you can get away with.

Sometimes your player will shoot when you just want to fake.

Some teams will not trade certain players no matter how much it would benefit them.

Too many passes get intercepted, but I think this was done to prevent lazy passing. If you learn to pass well, it will benefit your team immensely.

The Crib is pretty mundane, but I'm much more concerned about the gameplay.

The GM isn't very interactive. Mine has basically had the same comment through a season and a half.

Very limited selection of uniforms. This is something I miss that Live had.

Overall, I think this is a great game for those who want an authentic NBA game experience that will involve using a lot more thinking and skill than the other games out there. This was the best game I bought for under $10.00.

Good but could b better

The best aviable pro ball game out there. There r some draw backs such as the glices, where a cpu well dribble the ball out of bounds 4 no reason about 5 or 6 times a game and the game will frezze often. But the overall gamepaly is good and I have 2 say it is the best Basketball game since NBA Live 2004.

awful
Added 6/3/2007

NBA 2k7 is, relative to its era, perhaps the worst basketball game ever made. The gameplay is terribly unrealistic: players miss layups and dunks at an alarmingly unrealistic rate, players commit ludicrous turnovers, such as literally handing the ball to the other team, at an unrealistic rate, and the AI drastically cuts shooting percentages against better teams. Worthless.

Great game, still play it two years out
Added 5/18/2009

Great game, very rewarding for spending times and learning combination moves. I have owned this game for a couple of years, and still go back to play it occasionally. Very interesting achievements to unlock, including "record a 5X5 with Andrei Kirilenko". Pretty tough.

Arcade Basketball
Added 12/15/2007

I only played a couple of games with my friend. I'm an NBA Live fan myself, but I gave 2K a shot anyway. I've gotta say this game was really fun. The graphics weren't as good as Live, but the players movements were more realistic. However, the score at the end of the game was extremely high. The players moved really fast, giving the game more of an arcade feeling. For simulation style basketball, which is what I prefer, I go with NBA Live. But for flat out, run-and-gun basketball, 2K has what you need.

Better ut not Great
Added 7/17/2007

when first i bought this game i had high hopes especialy since playing the college version. the only reson i wont give this game 5 stars is because of those nasty menus because the way 2k has them set up you will be pulling out your hair in no time. Thats not to say the rest of the game is like that. There are plenty of games on those nasty menus to keep you busy for along time. the new in season scouting realy does this game a favour. although this game has great graphics the players still look like freaky mutants. almost all the players have their own shots that have been digitly captured and gives this game a personilized touch. overall i thought this game was an improvement over last years it still has some things that need to be worked out.
