Plot: Adapted from the nonfiction book by Natalie Robins and Steven M.L. Aronson, Tom Kalin's Savage Grace recounts the true crime tale of the death of Barbara Baekeland. Stephen Dillane stars as Brooks Baekeland, the son of the man who invented Bakelite, one of the early forms of plastic. As the family fortune begins to decrease after years of wealth, Brooks marries Barbara (Julianne Moore), who desires to mingle in the highest social circles. They have a child, Antony, who is homosexual. Antony grows up to kill Barbara, in part because Barbara takes a personal interest in curing her son of his orientation. This was Kalin's first film since 1991's Swoon, a film about the infamous Leopold and Loeb murders. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

Only for Certain Audiences
Added 11/14/2009

As it appears, this movie is slammed and praised for the same reason, the personality of the characters and the story. For anyone looking to view this movie be forewarned, this is for certain audiences. If your looking to watch a movie featuring a superficial, generic plot; characters with generic personalities; then this is not the movie for you. It might actually be better if you look into skimming the book it's based on first, then deciding if the movie is something you'd want to take the time to watch.

The story is dark and at most times twisted. The characters are not likable, their not supposed to be; they are from what could be called the "alleyway" of society. Yes their rich, but their also psychologically damaged beyond repair. Their actions are horrid, and their personalities are even worse. Just because the characters are not honorable, generous, or even understandable, doesn't make the movie bad. People like this do actually exist, its just that most of us would greatly try to avoid them. The actors in this movie were excellent. I think Moore did a great job portraying the damaged wife and mother. If your looking to watch something out of the norm, go ahead and give this a try.

Just be warned that this movie is truly, out of the norm.

Disturbing and worth watching
Added 9/24/2009

Julianne Moore is fabulous, no other words about it. The movie is very stylized, but you can't tell a story about a family's life without leaving out some pieces in 120 minutes. The family could have began with the best of intentions, but in her thirst, lust and need to belong, feel and give love, Julianne shifts the focus from her husband to son. He is also scarred and doesn't understand right from wrong, can't disobey his mother so to me accepts and enjoys the incestuous relationship. After viewing film in the theatre, someone commented 'the book was much better', but I've found that to be true in 99% of cases. Eddie Redmayne has a luscious pouty mouth.

The Sunday Night Blues
Added 9/9/2009

A friend of mine, who is a highly sophisticated and intelligent woman, and a gifted professional actress among her other assets, rented this on a Sunday evening. She described it to me the following day as "filthy trash" which proceeded to give her nightmares.

A PRETENTIOUS BORE
Added 7/29/2009

Savage Grace has such an interesting plot, but the characters and script are anything but interesting. The movie even put me to sleep toward the end, it was so boring. I'd say the only good thing about the film are a few explicit sex scenes. Those scenes, however, are not reason enough to see the movie. Avoid.

Usless Parasites Dead Bored
Added 7/25/2009

Living off a wealth inherited, the classic parasite UK couple of the circa middle last century hanged around the world to dissolve a boringness of own useless.

Father had seduced and moved in with a son's one night stay girl whilst mother, according to a movie, manipulated her lover to factually ruin son's intimate same gender affairs (not preferences), arranged threesome with a son, having her offspring consumed personally at some stage afterwards.

Borrowed from a public library, this grim ending DVD-produced reality-based story is a rare gem of self-exhibiting the destructive, socially poisonous environment sustained with inherited opportunities only.
