Plot: A slacker tries to do the right thing for his family with unexpectedly chaotic results in this independent comedy. Salman (Scott Prendergast) is an out-of-work twentysomething who has few skills and fewer prospects. However, things are significantly worse for his older brother -- his National Guard unit has been called back to Iraq, and his wife, Leslie (Lisa Kudrow), needs to go back to work in order to support their children. However, Leslie doesn't have anyone to look after her two sons, so when Salman learns of her sad situation, he volunteers to move in and help mind the kids. Salman quickly discovers the boys are nearly psychotic and will stop at nothing to get him out of the house, including putting sharp objects in his breakfast. With the household still short on money, Leslie helps Salman get a job, and soon he's become the corporate mascot for a failing Internet company, who pounds the pavement wearing a strange blue costume hoping to drum up interest in renting space in the corporate offices. The first feature film as writer and director for actor Scott Prendergast, Kabluey also stars Christine Taylor, Conchata Ferrell, Teri Garr, and Chris Parnell. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

not to oversell a gem, but i can quickly go into true LOL mode by simply thinking of any of many scenes in this quirkfest, a true bastard cousin of the lynchian fixed-frame observation. if you're not on board by the early plastic lamination scene, maybe you need to find another planet for parking yo' big fat hineyho'.

writer/director prendergast rules as the lackluster doofus lead, setting up a top notch punch or two from conchata ferrell. i watch the movie mainly for angela sarafyan, one of the world's choice beauties (inside and out), but thank lisa kudrow for signing in and rocking the foundation. even if you don't like 'Friends', it shouldn't matter. she's a real actor.

for a small indie, this is an easy 5 stars IMO, but more a 4 when compared to film in general. sit back, don't rush it, and enjoy first-rate weirdness from a movie i'm still surprised got made. also, check out the SUPER SECRET BOOTLEG DIRECTOR AND SPECIAL GUEST COMMENTARY MP3 available from the director's site:

Kabluey is awesome!

This is a movie that's funny, smart, and slightly odd. I thought the casting for this movie, and the chemistry between all the actors was amazingly great. This has been my go-to movie to bring to friend's movie nights, and it's always been a big hit.

Kabluey, written and directed by Scott Prendergast is one of our family's favorite movies. Prendergast brings his characteristic perspective to a feature film, starring in it as he does many of his shorts (The Delicious, Anna is Being Stalked, etc.). I will leave the plot summary to some of the other reviews (perhaps i should review the reviews). Both humorous and heartbreaking at times, the underlying message of this film is the strength in family, even when they may seem to be your biggest obstacles. The film quality is very professional, and Lisa Kudrow is at her usual best. The great thing about watching non-formulaic independent films as compared to big blockbusters is that you really don't predict what may happen. As an avid movie watcher, it's too easy to predict to the minute what is going to happen and when. The characters in Kabluey are real, and face things we all face, deployments, alienation from family, hideously torturous children to whom you are related and from whom you may not escape, marital affairs, everything but shrieking eels and ROUS's. Like the great character actors you will see peppered throughout this movie (Teri Garr, Conchita Ferrell) the characters within the film are funny and interesting. Prendergast can speak volumes with his facial expressions alone and you can read the very thoughts going through his characters face that you hear being spoken inside your head when you are stuck in odd and intractable situations beyond both your control and understanding. Is this your typical family movie? maybe not, but it suits ours perfectly and has held up well with repeated veiwings. and in the end, if you dont agree, its just a movie . . .

Although I am technically from outer space, I enjoyed the film a great deal.

You see, here on Mommy Cat Planet 8, we only get bootlegged versions of big studio movies about once a year. Every once in a while an indie Gem like Kabluey slips through. And nothing could be more delightful.

If I could take this opportunity to ask earthlings to eat less sodium (which will aid in our digesting of your peoples when we colonize your planet) I would be most grateful.

Again, I loved this movie. Kabluey looks like our president. But with legs.

PEACE

Some of the best movies are not the popular star studded extravaganzas we are exposed to. If you are looking for a real moment this is the movie. Enjoy!
