Plot: The writing and directing team who created Waiting for Guffman and Best in Show turn their satiric eye toward the world of folk music in this sly mockumentary. Irving Steinbloom was one of the great behind-the-scenes figures of the folk music boom of the late '50s and early '60s, and helped to nurture the careers of three of the best known acts of the era. The Folksmen -- Mark Shubb (Harry Shearer), Alan Barrows (Christopher Guest), and Jerry Palter (Michael McKean) -- were an earnest folk trio who sang of America's noble past and the challenges of the future; they split up in the early '70s after a failed attempt to go electric. Mitch & Mickey were a duo in both music and life, comprised of Mitch Cohen (Eugene Levy) and Mickey Devlin (Catherine O'Hara). They sang soulful songs of love until the collapse of their relationship sent Mitch into a deep and incapacitating depression. And The Main Street Singers were a nine-piece vocal group -- a neuftet, as they prefer it -- who offered energetic good-time music, cranking out nearly 30 albums in the course of a decade; their current incarnation, The New Main Street Singers (played by Jane Lynch, Parker Posey, John Michael Higgins, David Alan Blasucci, Steve Pandis, Christopher Moynihan, Paul Dooley and Patrick Sauber) is still on the road. When it is announced that the legendary Irving Steinbloom has died (the character never appears in the film), his son Jonathan (Bob Balaban) decides that the best way to memorialize his father is through music, and with the help of Mike LaFontaine (Fred Willard) of Hi-Class Management, they set out to bring The Folksmen, Mitch & Mickey, and The New Main Street Singers back together for a special concert at New York's Town Hall. Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer -- who previously teamed up for This Is Spinal Tap -- not only perform together as The Folksmen in A Mighty Wind, but composed most of the songs performed onscreen. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Everything was acceptable

Ordered Dec. 22nd - chose "fewest shipments" option, and it came with two other movies on Dec. 30th. Not bad over the Christmas Holiday. Cardboard case with the little plastic foldover piece - but it's what is pictured and is what I would expect for less than $6.

Anyone who is a fan of Christopher Guest and his troupe will love this movie. It is a fabulous "mockumentary" of the folk singing generation.

more great satire from Christopher Guest
Added 7/18/2009

If you are a fan of folk music from the late 50's/early 60's, (& can appreciate the humor of "This Is Spinal Tap"), then you'll probably love Christopher Guest's knowing & often hilarious take on this, at one time, hugely popular era of our musical culture. But if you're someone who has little or no Kingston Trio, The New Christy Minstrels, (& even Sonny & Cher) in your collection-3 of the groups satirized the most in this film- then you probably won't appreciate much of the humor that Guest throws at you. Having been a huge fan of that genre, though, I found it great fun trying to figure out all the groups that he alluded to throughout the film. But don't get offended if he "roasts" one of your favorites, as in "...Spinal Tap", for there is usually an underlying feeling of Guest's love & respect for those great artists. He just has a rare gift for seeing the humorous side of anyone or anything he puts his mind to writing about. Enjoy!

Definitely Exceeded My Expectations
Added 7/15/2009

I watched A Mighty Wind expecting it to be another Best in Show or Waiting for Guffman, but was hilariously surprised at how much of a departure from the previous Christopher Guest films it was. As is normal for them, the characters are completely nuts and the humor dry, but in this one there are all these folk groups, each of which has it s own host of bizarre members. It was very funny to see how much trouble is caused when they all get together for this reunion concert.

I like my comedies shaken, not stirred--and very dry.

The Irving Steinbloom Memorial Concert. The year: 2003. If you squint really hard, you might recognize the three members of The Folksmen as Spinal Tap, which would explain why the DVD release of The Return of Spinal Tap occurred in the same year. If you like extremely dry humor, this movie is for you, no matter your taste in music.

The description of these three titles as a "collection" is gross misrepresentation. The term implies something special or extended in nature, and it is just not the case. What was delivered was 3 separate DVDs, shrink-wrapped and banded together with a flimsy paper wrapper. Each identical title can be purchased separately for a fraction of the ~$50 cost of this so-called "collection". (All can be currently purchased separately for approximately $30 at Amazon.com) My 70 year-old mother was the victim of this bait and switch. Shame on you, Amazon.

Great movies, terrible price
Added 7/30/2009

Consider this...buying each movie separately:

A Mighty Wind: $5.99
Best in Show: $7.99
Waiting for Guffman: $13.49
Total: $27.47

Buying this package which includes nothing extra: $49.49

Is is just me or does something not add up here? You could throw in For Your Consideration for $5.99 and This Is Spinal Tap for $9.49 making your total $42.95 and it's STILL cheaper than this package.

Conclusion: DO NOT BUT THIS! But DO buy these movies. They are brilliantly hilarious.

How many babies fit in the tire? You know the old joke.

For anyone out there who like the work of Christopher Guest then this is the collection for you. Granted it doesn't have "For Your Consideration", but it is still a good buy for those of you who haven't already purchased the DVDs. The bonus material is great, especially on "Waiting For Guffman." There is a song that the cast sings that was not included with the movie called "Bulging River" and it is hilarious.
