Plot: Against all odds, a young woman realizes her dreams to study vocal music in this inspirational melodrama written by pop-star Britney Spears and her mother. Based on the Spears' semiautobiographical novel {-A Mother's Gift}, Brave New Girl traces the journey of Holly (Lindsey Haun), a plucky, lower middle-class Texas teen being raised by her equally plucky single mom, Wanda (Virginia Madsen). Holly's voice makes her shine in her school choir, but she's unsure she's got what it takes to leave her boyfriend and family behind -- until she gets accepted to one of the most prestigious music schools in the country. With her boyfriend's blessing and Wanda's small nest egg of savings, Holly and her mom trek north in their old convertible, depositing her on the steps of the academy. But music school proves to be even more challenging than Holly thought as she comes up against snobby attitudes and competitive classmates. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Holly, Wanda has a chance encounter with a man who may be Mr. Right -- and she decides to stay in the college town a little while longer. Brave New Girl premiered on the ABC Family network in 2004. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide

Allright movie. I wouldn't watch this over and over. I only buy it because it was produced by Britney and her mom. The movie doesn't really reflect the book. A must have for any Britney fan.

Dreams can come true with faith, hard work and perseverance

This 2004 tv film is based on the book "A Mother's Gift" written by Britney Spears and her mother. The story involves a single mother (Virginia Madsen) and her talented daughter (Lindsey Haun) who are poor, good-hearted Texans. The daughter's dream is to go to a prestigious music school in Philadelphia. The mother sacrifices everything (literally) to make it happen. There are humiliating obstacles and intense pressures. Can the daughter persevere and succeed. What about the mother?

Some people wrote negative reviews just because the story was written and produced by Britney Spears and her mother. These people obviously hate Britney. Regardless, the truth is she's a talented, likable pop musician/showman, not to mention incredibly famous. I don't listen to her style of music and would likely never buy one of her cds or see her in concert but who can deny this?

What matters is: Is the story any good? Yes it is. Both my wife and I enjoyed it from beginning to end. No, it won't blow you away or anything, but it holds all the way and throws in a couple of surprises.

Lindsey Haun, who plays the daughter, is very reminiscent of Melissa Joan Hart of "Sabrina" -- both likable and cute. There are quite a few other likable cast members, including Madsen. The story also features a couple of people you'll love-to-hate. Also be on the lookout for the redheaded dancer played by Jessica Dawson, who is incredibly good-looking, to say the least.

Other than the obvious fulfilling-your-dreams-through-belief-and-perseverance-despite-the-obstacles, the story addresses a few other important themes:

-- You'll always have an enemy who wants you to fail.
-- There will always be people who are willing to give you a helping hand or guidance; take advantage of these precious souls.
-- It's easy to take for granted the good things in your life until you meet someone who doesn't have them.
-- As two of Solomon's proverbs state: "Better a meal of vegetables where there is love than a fattened calf with hatred" and "Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting with strife."

Saw the beginning of this movie on TV and never saw it again to see the end. So bought the movie and enjoyed seeing the entire movie without breaks. Everything went well from initial order to watching the movie. Well worth the price.

Based on a Book
Added 12/13/2006

This movie is based on the book "Brave New Girl" that Britney Spears and her mom Lynn Spears co-wrote. It is actually a pretty good book and the movie dipicts the story well. I think that the book is actually better, and Britney and her mother are pretty good authors in my opinion.

I loved this movie. I saw it while traveling overseas, and ordered it from Amazon to show to my wife and son when I got home. I can't watch most movies once, much less a second time, but when I got home I watched it with them and they loved it. Wish there were more of these being made today.
