Plot: Adapted by Larry Gelbart from the novel by Avery Corman, the film stars John Denver as Jerry Landers, the assistant manager of a grocery store who is chosen by God (George Burns) to spread the Word to the rest of the world. Not surprisingly, Jerry is soon labelled a basket case: even his loving wife Bobbie (Teri Garr) doubts her husband's sanity. But there's enough evidence on Jerry's side for a panel of prominent clerics to demand that the hapless fellow prove in court that he's the agent of God. Donald Pleasence was supposed to have an extended supporting role in the film, but the first cut ran too long, and Pleasence's dialogue was eliminated -- but not Pleasence himself, who retains his prominent billing and is seen doing precisely nothing in several scenes. Netting $30 million on its first run, Oh God was followed by two lesser sequels, both featuring Burns. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This was the best movie to show proof of one mam's God, but done in nothing except humer. They don't make movies like this anymore.

A feel-good movie that has never gotten stale or dated. Remake it without John Denver's haircut and the '70s vehicles, and the exact same script would seem just as fresh today. You may not belly-laugh, but you'll smile throughout and consider it a well-spent hour and a half. Religious beliefs not required to appreciate this gem.

RICHARD'S REVIEW OF 'OH! GOD'
Added 5/9/2009

I remember seeing this film on TV some years ago and when I saw it was available from Amazon I simply had to have a copy. It is so heartwarming. It has such a clever script, beautifully delivered by dear old George Burns and a youthful John Denver. Teri Garr is the same perplexed wife as she was in 'Close Encounters', thinking her husband is going round the bend! The corrupt preacher and cynical lawyers are all taught their lesson in a splendid plot. A kind, gentle, Christian film. Wonderful!

I've always enjoyed this film but never got around to buying it until now. George Burns' performance is excellent - humorous but with a point.

I haven't viewed this yet, although I saw the movie years ago. I'll be sharing this DVD when my grand daughter comes to visit.
