I had rented this one last year and loved it. I decided it was one that needed to be on hand. What a beautiful movie.

Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor--children of famous Indian actors (Ranbir is the son of Rishi Kapoor and Sonam is the daughter of Anil Kapoor)--made their film debuts in the lead roles, alongside veteran actors Rani Mukerji and Salman Khan in supporting roles, and all four give admirable performances in this gorgeously shot picture. Despite this, the movie--based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's short story White Nights--is as cold and lifeless as a Russian winter. The scenes are bathed in an icy blue light and the voices echo off the sound stage walls--which would be all well and good if the actors weren't struggling to inject some verve into this listless story of boy loves girl who loves another boy. Somehow, the brilliance of Dostoevsky doesn't translate here, and the attempt at visual East/West fusion--with prostitutes in silken saris walking 19th-century European streets--fails to create a nexus. However, the leads are two beautiful young actors who show great potential right out of the gate, Mukerji successfully plays against type as a jaded hooker, and Khan is hauntingly intense as a rough, mysterious man of the world. - The Bollywood Ticket: The American guide to Indian movies (Subscribe: The Bollywood Ticket)

Probably spent a good amount on the visuals but not enough on the plot

The visuals (art, lighting, effects etc) were stunning - but that's it. I couldn't even make it halfway. The story was sooo weird. I've seen many Bollywood films (not more than your average Indian but certainly more than your average American) and I can honestly say this is one of the worst stories/plots ever - I don't even remember what was going on.. I just remember telling myself, "hold on..give it another 10 minutes." After 40-45 minutes I pulled the DVD out and cursed at myself for wasting that much time. Again, just want to say the visuals were great (the only reason I added one star)... I really wish the story would have been better.

From the very first scene I was sucked into this magical fairy tale story. I cannot remember ever seeing a film this good- A film that transports you into a dream and suspends reality to the very end. Some reviewers say it looks 'fake' or 'dark'. I will say this, the film is more like a Broadway show than your typical movie. The sets are no more 'fake' looking than any scene from Johnny Depp's 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' or Jim Carrey's 'The Grinch'. A bad Broadway set looks 'fake' and a good one looks like 'art'. Fortunately this film has some of the most elaborate eye popping sets I have ever seen. If you do not enjoy live Broadway shows like 'Wicked' then yes, you probably will not like this film.
There are some who are critical of the ending- thankfully this is not some 'Disney - Nothing Bad Ever Happens and We All Live Happily Ever After' film. The story revolves around a prostitute who is in love with a dreamer and the dreamer who is in love with a beautiful mysterious lady who awaits the return of her true love who left years ago. If you are looking for a typical Hollywood ending that circumvents the story it's based on you need to look elsewhere. The story also takes place entirely at night, so a lot of the backgrounds are lit in blue or neon or candles- as such, this movie will not play well on a small 19" TV screen in a brightly lit room. If you have a widescreen TV put this on, turn down the lights, and get ready to be transported.
