Plot: The Trollenberg Terror, authored by Peter Key and directed by Quentin Lawrence, started life on British television as a six-part installment of ITV's Saturday Serial in late 1956 and early 1957. The big-screen version, was adapted by Jimmy Sangster, who compressed most of the best horrific and mystery elements of the original into an under-90-minute vehicle, which Lawrence directed. At a remote Alpine village, mountaineers suddenly start dying, their bodies horribly multilated -- at first, these incidents seem like they could just be accidents. But the arrival of a pair of sisters (Janet Munro, Jennifer Jayne), one of whom feels an almost telepathic connection with someone or something on the mountain, attracts the interest of American Alan Brooks (Forrest Tucker), a trouble-shooter for the United Nations. He and Prof. Crevett (Warren Mitchell), who has been monitoring the radiation levels in the area from a research station set up by the government, determine that there is a pattern to these deaths that Brooks has seen before, in a prior incident in the Andes Mountains. They determine that the Earth has been invaded, at high altitude, by a race of gigantic, tentacled aliens who live in thin atmosphere and at extremely low temperatures. Camouflaging themselves in a dense radioactive cloud, they've been content up until now to hide their existence while experimenting with the inhabitants of their new world -- they've taken over some human subjects telepathically, and also re-animated dead bodies. And they've killed those -- such as the hapless mountaineers who have stumbled upon their new lair, or those few humans whose stronger-than-usual mental powers have allow them to sense the aliens' presence -- who threaten to discover them. But now Crevett sees that the aliens are adapting and moving down the mountain, the cloud bringing their necessary cold temperatures with them, and threatening to engulf the village as prelude to an attack on it and all that lies beyond. The Trollenberg Terror was retitled The Crawling Eye when it was released in the United States, in an obvious attempt to draw the same audience that had made the previous year's British film adaptation of a tv serial -- The Quatermass Xperiment, renamed The Creeping Unknown -- into a huge hit in the US. ~ Bruce Eder, All Movie Guide

Silly

Don't expect to be scared unless you are under 10 years old. Silly movie that is laughable at best. The set looks like it was made in 6th grade art class. I laughed at it throughout and then I wondered why I actually bought it! But if you collect silly B horror movies, you just might like it. No where near the B status of The Blob!

Been a long time since I saw this and the quality is superb considering it's from the 1950's. I forgot how much I enjoyed this film. Those were the days.

One of the best classic monster movies

I had to get a second copy of this because I loaned it out and never got it back. I guess they loved this movie too. I enjoyed this movie on Chiller Theater as a kid and as an adult it's still a fun movie to watch. Even though it's in black and white the special affects were great for its time as well as the creatures. The movie as well as others of it's time had some pretty cool storylines that kept you hooked into the movie. Funny thing is most kids wouldn't even give this movie a shot cause it's B & W but when they heard the eerie sound the creatures made they were hooked. This is a great movie for anyones collection and for those who love a good classic horror monster movie.

British Sci Fi Horror keeps the veiwer involved.

The DVD transfer is really pretty good. There are a few scratches here and there but they don't cause any problems. For the great part of the film, it is clear and sharp.

The title is actually "The Trollenberg Terror" but packaged under it's American release name. This film holds suspense well, has some nice underplayed acting jobs and builds it's pace well enough to keep the viewer involved. A United Nations science expert (B movie guy, Cameron Mitchell) is called to Switzerland to investigate a number of gruesome beheadings high in the Swiss Alps. Along the way Mitchell meets the usual pretty girl in these pictures but here, the girl travels with another girl, a clairvoyant(Janet Munro). The creatures at the tops of Alps sense the clairvoyant and she can sense them. This brings the film to its conflict as the "Crawling Eyes" have to take her out to remain undetected. As the monsters come closer and closer to the town more murders, more strange happenings until.....we meet the EYE. Ok.....you have to watch film to find out the rest.

Recommended for: '50s Sci Fi fans, horror fans. Not suitable for smaller children. The gore has minimum shock value based on the black and white film medium but there is still gore.
