Plot: Jennifer Lopez stars in this gritty, emotional drama as police officer Sharon Pogue, who covers up a painful past with an anger that fuels her job performance in one of Chicago's toughest precincts. Although her partner Robby (Terrence Howard) is concerned about Sharon, she won't confide even in her closest friend. Sharon's life takes a turn, however, when she's saved from a violent assault by Catch Lambert (James Caviezel), a haunted, enigmatic do-gooder whose guardian-angel deeds make him a hero to some, like disabled shut-in Elanora Davis (Shirley Knight). Sharon becomes romantically involved with Catch, with whom she has more in common than she imagines, as Catch is also tortured by a painful, traumatic event from his past. Angel Eyes, which is directed by Luis Mandoki and written by Gerald DiPego, co-stars Sonia Braga, Alfonso Arau, Jeremy Sisto, and Victor Argo. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

This is one of few women actors I really like.
She can be a lady or she can be rough & tough.
I give this movie a 5 of 5 stars!!

Very Insightful

As a Victim Advocate, I found this story to have very truthful elements in it. Sadly, abusers don't think they are in the wrong.

Great Chemistry!

Great plot and pacing. I was surprised at the chemistry between Jennifer Lopez and Jim Caveziel. Well written and balanced, especially the scenes dealing with domestic abuse in the family. I thought I was going to get an original DVD from the movie company, but it ended up being a copy. It was a good copy though. Can't complain.

An Underrated Masterpiece
Added 12/23/2008

Most people would probably wonder how the words "masterpiece" and "Jennifer Lopez" could possibly go together, but there you have it - "Angel Eyes" is a little gem of a film, hardly known even to many Jennifer Lopez fans themselves, as it plays out more like a taut independent film rather that a big studio-sponsored endeavor.

This is one film that really surprised me, and till date is only one of four movies I can watch over and over on repeat - I never tire of it. The primary reason for this is because this is not really a romance or a 'chick flick'. Its a very mature story about two adults who have been horribly hurt by their pasts, and who use each other in the most positive way possible to grow and blossom. It is absolutely gritty, real and spares no awkward emotion in making us believe that these are real people with real problems.

No fan of Lopez here, but her nuanced performance made me realize that she is definitely an actress who should have won awards for this role. She is tremendously expressive, and towards the end of the movie, she is spectacular. My personal favorite scene was the climax, where the writers could have made a 'happy ending', but instead its a sad, true depiction of what happens even in the best families today. Just so amazing.

Jim Caviezel, who was never a great actor to begin with, uses his silent presence to his advantage. Everything about this film just works, and even if you think that you may not be a 'slow movie' kind of person, you will enjoy this. Its sad that people often overlook this once they see that picture of J-Lo on the cover, but this really is a fine piece of film-making, comparable to the greatest films ever made (it really is THAT good).

Five Stars. A Classic in my home.

LUIS MANDOKI, OPUS 7
Added 9/6/2008

***1/2 2001. Directed by Luis Mandoki. Chicago. A female police officer, with family problems, falls in love with a strange man who refuses to accept that his family died in a car crash the year before. This film could have been worse. What I liked about this movie were its atmosphere and Lopez and Caviezel's performances, what I disliked were the scenes involving Jennifer Lopez's family which I found very badly written and not natural at all. Nonetheless, I recommend ANGEL EYES to those of you who are desperately researching an adult film for a rainy week-end.
